Highlights
  • São Miguel Island - São Miguel thermal waters are well known to be an amazing phenomenon, a side effect from the active island volcanoes. Furnas is a place where the volcano activity can be closely observed and experienced in all its splendor.

We will cover with you all of the wonders coming from Furnas Volcano: Furnas lake, geysers, steam cooking pods and water fountains.

After this indulge yourself in a steaming bath at Poça da D. Beija (1 ticket per person already included), great even under winter weather and that will relax your mind and rejuvenate your muscles. After the hot bath you can replenish your energies with local delicacies: the “Bolo Lêvedo’’ (yeast cake); corn or even the famous “cozido” cooked on the boiling waters of the volcano (meals are not included, “cozido” costs about 15€ per person).

To complete this amazing experience, on our way to or back you will also be at the tea plantation, the only place that grows tea in Europe, and taste our unique green tea. The perfect day in São Miguel even if it’s raining!

Definitely recommended 👏 - Our guide Carlos took us to many great places and told us a lot of interesting information and stories. He knew everything about the Azores culturally, economically and historically, that was really unique! He was super flexible and took a lot of time for us. A clear recommendation, especially because you don't end up in mass processing, but are looked after individually with a lot of heart. Thank you Carlos for this unforgettable day!

Amazing Experience - We spent an amazing time touring the East & Furnas. Our tour guide Carlos was very knowledgeable on the history of the Azores. We found him to be very personable, kind and considerate. He did not rush us in any way. The scenery was magnificent and stunning. Carlos is a great historian and a very interesting narrator. We saw so much stunning scenery on the tour. We enjoyed a swim in the geothermal pool at Terra Nostra hot springs. I really believe that you get to see much more by booking a tour guide rather than renting a car. We hope to return to the Azores and will not hesitate to book with Villa Vareza again.

Sao Miguel: Heaven on Earth - My girlfriend and I came to Sao Miguel for our 7th anniversary and her birthday; Carlos (our tour guide) has made it so that we never want to leave this paradise on earth. So sweet and kind, knowledgeable, patient — he made it so that this experience was perfectly smooth, we never felt rushed or like we missed out on anything that we passed by. Cannot recommend this day trip enough, from communicating with the operator over the viator app, to being picked up and dropped off at our hotel; everything was great!

Great Experience with Friendly, Knowledgeable Guide - We had a great time meeting the happy cows of the Azores! The weather was unexpectedly a bit rainy on the morning we met Carlos. Wanting us to have the best experience possible, with no prompting from us, very generously offered us the chance to do the tour another day if we wanted. We decided to carry on so we departed Ponta Delgada with Carlos. Driving us to meet the cows, Carlos provided us with a great deal of information about Sao Miguel island, the history of the island and the people and culture of the Azores. Once we arrived in the pasture with the cows, we learned a great deal about cows, dairy productions on the island and the farmers who make it possible. We had the opportunity to milk the cows and to taste fresh milk -- a first for me and my husband. (It was warm, sweet and delicious!). Afterwards, we had some massa savada (sweet bread) and coffee with Carlos and continued a warm, informative, unhurried conversation. The time we spent with Carlos was terrific and more like visiting with a relative we hadn't seen in a while than going on a formal tour. We highly recommend Carlos and meeting the happy cows of the Azores! Diane Roias & Lamar Spells
