Banana juice, with or without the fun addition of beer, has been a core element of Rwandan celebrations including weddings for a long time. Even though you can conveniently purchase banana juice from a nearby store today, the traditional method of brewing it yourself is a much more rewarding endeavor.

In the early hours of the day, you’ll join your rural host to gather the green bananas and leaves necessary to initiate the process. Following this, you’ll dig a pit and bury the bananas allowing them to mature over time.

Post a hearty meal with your hospitable host family, you’ll go to the tap to fill up water. Though the maturation process takes about four days, don’t fret- you won’t be required to wait. Your hosts will have some pre-buried bananas ready for you to excavate. You’ll then peel, squish, and filter the bananas employing conventional methods, and there you have it- your own genuine banana juice.

The day winds up at the local pub where the beer is brewed and sold to the locals, making it convenient for you to savor and take home.
