- The Spanish Arch - The tour begins at the Spanish Arch, located on the banks of the River Corrib. This site is part of the last fully-intact section of the medieval city walls. Here, the story of Galway unfolds, detailing its transformation from a Gaelic settlement to a prosperous Anglo-Norman walled city-state, governed by 14 families known as the “Tribes.” It was an international trading port, loyal to the Crown, yet wary of the Gaels who surrounded its walls.
- Claddagh Jewellers - Across the river from the Spanish Arch is the historic fishing village of Claddagh, which inspired the 17th-century tale of the famous Claddagh Ring. Prepare for stories of galleons, pirates, slave markets, a test of loyalty, and a love story that endured against all odds.
- Quay Street - As we enter the medieval city, we proceed to Quay Street, the heart of Galway’s life for nearly 800 years. Today, it is a lively area with numerous pubs, diverse restaurants, several cafés, a Claddagh Ring museum, and a medieval castle. Honest advice on dining and drinking options is readily available at no extra charge.
- Kirwan’s Lane - We take a detour from Quay Street to explore this hidden medieval laneway, sometimes to escape the crowds. Named after one of Galway City’s renowned 14 merchant tribes, Kirwan’s Lane offers a glimpse into a time when Galway was among the most affluent cities in Britain or Ireland.
- Saint Nicholas’ Collegiate Church - The narrative of Galway’s rise and fall converges at the 700-year-old Church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and others. Discover tales of wealthy merchants with questionable morals, English soldiers with a vendetta against art, prolonged sieges, rapid plagues, and a 300-year decline that set the stage for Galway’s resurgence. If asked politely, a recommendation for Galway’s finest cheese and wine bar might be given. If visiting on a Saturday, the wonders of Galway’s Saturday Market, including doughnuts, fresh oysters, and unique air plants, are not to be missed.
- The Lynch Memorial - With much of the history covered, it’s time for one of Galway’s oldest and most intriguing stories: the 15th-century tale of Mayor James Lynch Fitzstephen and his wayward son, Walter. This story involves two passionate young men, a rivalry for a young woman’s affection, a violent street encounter, and a strict father. Plus, Ireland’s oldest tourist attraction.
- Lynch’s Castle - Located on Shop St., the city’s main street, Galway’s finest medieval building was the residence of the powerful Lynch family for centuries. Now one of Ireland’s most magnificent banks, the building features beautiful crests and carvings, one of which tells the story of a devastating fire and an unexpected rescue. A recommendation for one of Galway’s top whiskey pubs is included, along with a tale of a humorous encounter between a tourist and a witty barman in the 1980s. (And, if agreeable, the tour’s only mild swear word!)
- Naughton’s Pub (Tigh Neachtain) - The tour concludes with the story of Galway’s most extraordinary son: Humanity Dick! Back on Quay St., we pause outside one of Galway’s finest pubs, Tigh Neachtáin. This charming building was once the townhouse of Galway’s most underrated celebrity, Humanity Dick. Martin’s life was truly remarkable: He was a renowned duellist, earning the nickname “Hairtrigger Dick,” a pioneer in animal rights legislation in the London Parliament, a founding member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and a landlord of nearly all of Connemara. He was also frequently bankrupt, a fugitive from the law, and one of the late 18th century’s most notorious cuckolds.
