Setting Sail on Gatun Lake

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as we set off on our adventure to Gatun Lake. The air was thick with the promise of a day filled with discovery and wonder. As a seasoned traveler of Central America’s coastlines, I was eager to trade the familiar rhythm of the waves for the gentle lapping of the lake against our boat. Our guide, Angel, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of the Panama Canal’s history as we cruised alongside massive cargo ships. The juxtaposition of nature and industry was a sight to behold, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of it all.

As we approached Monkey Island, the excitement was palpable. After our exhilarating encounter with the monkeys, we made our way to the Emberá Katuma community. The warm welcome we received was nothing short of heartwarming. The presentation was both informative and engaging, and I found myself captivated by the stories of the Emberá’s connection to the land and their deep respect for nature. As someone who has spent countless hours riding the waves and feeling the ocean’s power, I felt a kinship with their reverence for the natural world. The lunch that followed was a delightful affair, featuring fresh fish and patacones that were as delicious as they were authentic.
