Highlights
  • Gananoque - Gananoque, the Gateway to the 1000 Islands, is internationally recognized as one of Eastern Ontario’s most stunning waterfront communities and is thoroughly enjoyed by residents, tourists and the local business community.
  • Heard Island and McDonald Islands - McDonald Island is an islet in Ontario. McDonald Island is situated nearby to White Calf Islands, and close to Ynysrag Island.
  • Howe Island - Howe Island is one of the worlds renowned 1000 islands on the St. Lawrence River mid-way between Kingston and Gananoque, Ontario.
  • Thousand Islands - The 1000 Islands (French: Mille-Îles) actually consist of 1864 islands located in the Saint Lawrence River stretching out over 50 miles between Canada and the US border. (Northeast corner of Lake Ontario to Kingston Ontario.)

The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the U.S. islands in the state of New York.

To be considered one of the Thousand Islands, one square foot of land must stay above water for an entire year and support a living tree. The islands range in size from over 40 square miles to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks. Many of the islands are also publicly owned offering visitors, parks, campgrounds and rental cottages.

Additional Information

Embark on City Cruises departing from Gananoque for an hour-long tour, that brings you nearer to the picturesque views than any other service in the 1000 Islands. The location, once referred to as the “Garden of the Great Spirit” by the Iroquois Nation, is peaceful on the surface, masking its exciting past of pioneering adventures, wars, and uprisings. Get a glimpse of cottages owned by fifth and sixth-generation families and explore the tight waterways of the Admiralty and Navy island groups through the most detailed tour offered in the 1000 Islands.

Situated as the entry point to the 1000 Islands, Gananoque is about three hours from Toronto, two hours from Ottawa, and three hours from Montreal. It’s just a 15-minute journey from the New York State border crossing via the 1000 Islands Bridge and under an hour’s drive from Watertown. Gananoque can be reached via Highway 401 and The King’s Highway 2 from Kingston, Ontario.

  • Please note that our cruises will take place rain or shine. However, if severe weather or unsafe water conditions arise and we determine it is unsafe to sail, we will cancel the cruise.

Great Cruise and our Dog was allowed on board! - A great way to spend an evening on the water touring the Thousand Islands! We spent the previous day enjoying a meal at City Cruises bar/restaurant - Dockside Restaurant. There we met Lisa, VP of Operations for City Cruise (who happened to be our server. How often does that happen??). Now there's a VP that knows the business top to bottom! But I digress. We asked about the cruise, in particular, were dogs allowed? Lisa said she'd be thinking of starting a "YAPPY HOUR" for dogs and what better way to start then have Beau their first customer! The three of us had a great time on the cruise. The commentary provided was informative and the cruise gave us a thorough view of the islands. HIghly recommend.

Disappointed, doesn't float with other boats - I have done many boat Cruises with my family. We do it all the time, where ever we go. We usually are given a handout/map of the route the boat takes and a brief explanation on the handout of each spot. The speakers were a joke, we stood right underneath the one on the upper deck and couldn't hear anything. There were to many people, which is good for you but bad for any one who actually wants to listen to what is being said. Way to many kids running around, not watched by their parents and yelling. So when we finally got to stand inside we still couldn't hear the speaker. Alot of money is made on that boat, you should be able to afford better quality sound system and handouts. We were herded like cattle on and off. They were more concerned about taking people's food away and throwing it under their sign. My daughter is a diabetic on a insulin pump and frequently runs low, plus she has celiac disease and needs special food. Fighting over a granola is ridiculous for a 1 hour boat ride. I am a Emerg nurse with years under my belt, I know the outcome of low sugar and coma, I highly doubt a student does. You do not offer food, so what is the problem, clean up? You make alot of money.
