Gatas Bay is situated on the northeast coast of Boa Vista.
“Gatas” is derived from the regional term for the nurse shark.
However, this creature is entirely non-threatening and notably timid.
Snorkeling excursions are feasible solely during high tide because the bay’s depth decreases significantly at low tide, causing the coral formations to nearly emerge above the water’s surface.
All necessary gear, including footwear, a mask, and a snorkel, is supplied. We abstain from using flippers to prevent harming the delicate coral structures. Nonetheless, they are unnecessary as there is no water movement and the water is only about 1.5 meters deep.
The drive to Gatas (in a 4WD pickup truck) is approximately 50 minutes from Sal Rei.
The time spent snorkeling typically ranges from 45 to 60 minutes.
On the return journey, we make a stop at a quaint
Bar in the village of Joao Galego for refreshments and light bites.

“Gatas Bay” is situated on the northeastern shore of Boa Vista. The term “Gatas” is the local name for the nurse shark, which is completely harmless and very timid.
Snorkeling tours are only feasible during high tide, as the bay becomes very shallow at low tide, causing the coral heads to almost break the water’s surface.
We provide equipment such as shoes, life jackets, masks, and snorkels. We avoid using fins to protect the delicate corals, but they are unnecessary as there is no current and the depth is only around 1.5 meters.
The journey to Gatas, in a four-wheel-drive pick-up vehicle, takes approximately 50 minutes from Sal Rei. We typically spend 45-60 minutes in the water. On the return trip, we stop at a small bar in the village of Joao Galego for a drink and a snack.
