Highlights
  • Oxford Castle & Prison - Embark on a guided tour today and let the characters unveil the captivating tales embedded in the building’s 1,000-year history. When William the Conqueror invaded England and triumphed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the Normans identified Oxford Castle as the perfect site for a motte-and-bailey castle. Today, nearly a millennium later, Oxford Castle & Prison stands as a visitor attraction with a history that stretches far beyond imagination.

Guided tours last approximately an hour, run every 20 minutes, and are led by one of the castle’s costumed character guides. The rich history of Oxford and the castle is unveiled as you ascend the Saxon St George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and take in its breathtaking 360° panoramic views over the historic city.

Next, descend deep underground into the eerie atmosphere of the 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remnants of St. George’s Chapel, where it is said that the education for which Oxford is renowned began, and where Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote the Legends of King Arthur. Explore the stark confines of the 18th-century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-Wing, and climb the Mound of the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.

After your tour, you will be inducted into the castle’s prison and wider site, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Admission to the castle is by guided tour only.

Great accessable informative tour - Thankyou to Anne and Ash for a great tour, with their storyelling that brought the Castle to life.very entertaining and knowledgeable. Our daughter who is a full time wheelchair user thougherly enjoyed the visit as she was able to access all but the tower, but didnt feel she'd missed anything as the film show at the base of tower showed the tower and its sights , also explaining the history. We really appreciated the sympathetic Conversion and Way the castle has been restored and made accessable! Not always found in historic buildings , so thankyou very much . Very enjoyable

Such an amazing and magical guided tour on "Open Doors" weekend - Well Emily, what can I say that hasn't already been said by so many people before? You mesmerised and captivated the group you hosted, in the way you spoke, and took us on a trip deep into Oxford, and its Castle & Prison's past history, by adding colour and enriching each story as you went along - even if some of it was pretty gruesome. What a breathtaking, well told tour we had... the three of us couldn't believe that you've only been doing this a couple of months. Around an hour long (though you had the feeling Emily could have gone on much longer if she had the time), this is so highly recommendable, especially if you're looking to dig deep into the City's bygone days. Time at the end to ask questions, which we certainly did; and to look around all the exhibits and information. Greg, CS

Interesting and entertaining. - Stumbled across the castle whilst wandering around Oxford, but so glad we did the tour. It was very interesting and our tour guide, Ella, was informative and entertaining. There is a lot of history within the castle and prison. You can even have your mug shot taken and find out what crime you were extradited for!
