Highlights
  • Oxford Castle & Prison - Embark on a guided tour today and let the characters unveil the captivating tales embedded in the building’s 1,000-year history. When William the Conqueror invaded England and triumphed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the Normans identified Oxford Castle as the perfect site for a motte-and-bailey castle. Today, nearly a millennium later, Oxford Castle & Prison stands as a visitor attraction with a history that stretches far beyond imagination.

Guided tours last approximately an hour, run every 20 minutes, and are led by one of the castle’s costumed character guides. The rich history of Oxford and the castle is unveiled as you ascend the Saxon St George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and take in its breathtaking 360° panoramic views over the historic city.

Next, descend deep underground into the eerie atmosphere of the 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remnants of St. George’s Chapel, where it is said that the education for which Oxford is renowned began, and where Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote the Legends of King Arthur. Explore the stark confines of the 18th-century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-Wing, and climb the Mound of the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.

After your tour, you will be inducted into the castle’s prison and wider site, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Admission to the castle is by guided tour only.

Very interesting prison and castle - Highly recommended tour with a very knowledgeable, interesting and interactive guide called Kara. She told us lots of interesting facts throughout the tour, engaged the audience and answered all questions. It was expensive though; 18 pounds for adults and 17 pounds for students.

Definitely visit here when in Oxford - The whole experience was great. Our tour guides were Keira and Frederick, both were so informative about the prison and castle right through the times and both were approachable if we had any questions about anything. I loved that Keira was dressed up as a prisoner I think she said, from the old days. I really enjoyed this experience and would definitely go again. Entry to the mound opposite is also included, which I didn't know before I got there. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Leave the Stair-Master at home! - We had a wonderful time exploring the ancient history of Oxford Castle and Tower. Our tour guide, Fredrick, brought an entertaining explanation of the deep history and could climb all those steps so fast! It was difficult navigating the small steps with backpacks, but Fredrick was patient as we made our slow climb to the different levels of the tower. The mug shot photo they provide was a fun memorabilia and they provide a value pack for only £20 that includes 3 printed photos, all digital photos with various backgrounds, and a key chain and magnet with the photo of your liking. Would recommend!

Great tour guides - Really informative tour which myself and my husband found so interesting. It wasn’t boring at all. We had two guides, both of which were absolutely brilliant. But a special mention goes to Emily who only started with the team three days ago. Her ability to retain and relay information, together with making this captivating and interesting was amazing. Thanks for a great tour!

A must do - The castle itself is okay, it was mainly a prisomn so do not expect anything ornate or stunning. What is cool though and done excellently was the tour. I loved it! I forget the name of our guide, Matt? He was fun, told the history of the castle amazingly well and had us all so engaged. The castle has so much history to it, right up until 1996 when it was finally shut as a prison. Intense history, but also notable. Do not miss the crypts as well

Really informative! Thank you Ella! - We booked in advance (the tickets are slightly cheaper in advance) but a slight downside is if you get any emergency services discount you have to buy them in person, which is a shame. However, that aside, which is a minor point, getting to the castle is easy, and is a short walk from any of the main car parks. Upon arrival, there is a gift shop, and all the employees are extremely knowledgeable about the castle. Our tour was run by Ella, who was wearing period costume suitable to the era, and whom guided us up the tower (great view of Oxford) and unravelled the history of the Castle. The tour is really inclusive so if you cannot go up the stairs there is a video you watch which covers it, so you do not miss out. Moving into the prison side, she talked through the sort of prison it was and you get to be in the cells where the criminals were (some of whom were very young and had only stolen a loaf of bread!) There are information boards up in both the castle and prison, and after you have the guided tour you are free to wander and read all the boards. Really interesting tour - and one worth doing :)

Unexpectedly Enlightening Experience - So this was not on our plan when we reached Oxford from London. We just happened to see all the signs and decided to give it a try, and we were not disappointed. We didn't know what to expect from the tour, so everything felt exciting. We were fortunate enough to have Ella (or was it Elia) who guided us through the prison, the tower, the crypt, the prison rooms to the exhibition rooms. Do spend some time reading up on what the prison experience was like (the padded cell was an unnerving experience), and to read about young prisoners was heartbreaking (14-year-old boys were imprisoned for 41 days for stealing bread). There is enough history here, with lots of interesting stories/ anecdotes about the historical figures. I was particularly interested in the Crypt, especially when we were told a particular corner was haunted. (fun fact, Oxford Castle + Prison is the most haunted place in Oxford!). The stairs to the top of the tower is 101 steps, so some may miss out on that experience. All in all, it was a worthwhile unexpected detour, helped immensely by our tour guide, Ella (or Elia).

Poor - I think its not worth it for the amount that they charge for it. It's also not a castle but a single tower and some prison cells. The story was interesting but not worth it.
