Highlights

Blowing Stone - The Blowing Stone is a perforated sarsen stone, located in Kingston Lisle, Oxfordshire. Legend has it that King Alfred used the stone to summon his troops before the Battle of Ashdown in 871 AD. When blown into, the stone emits a loud, trumpet-like sound that can be heard for miles.

White Horse Hill - The White Horse may have served as a territorial marker or fertility symbol. The site’s strategic position along the Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest road, suggests it was a significant ceremonial location. The alignment with the winter solstice hints at its use in ancient rituals.

Ashbury - Passing by this ancient village associated with the legends of Alfred the Great.

The Cathedral Oak - The Cathedral Oak is one of the oldest trees in Savernake Forest, dating back over 1,000 years.

Avebury - Avebury is the largest megalithic stone circle in the world, dating back over 4,500 years. It may have been used for rituals, astronomical observations, and communal gatherings. The nearby Red Lion Pub is said to be haunted. We will have lunch in Avebury, where you can choose to eat at the Pub, or have your own picnic.

St James’s Church - The Red Lion Pub, located within the Avebury stone circle, is reputedly one of the most haunted pubs in England. It dates back to the 16th century and has a well inside the bar area.

West Kennet Long Barrow - The barrow’s alignment with the sunrise on certain days suggests it was used for rituals marking the passage of time and the seasons. We also visit the secret spring nearby.

Silbury Hill - Silbury Hill is the largest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe. Its purpose remains a mystery, but some theories suggest it was a symbolic “pregnant” Earth Mother goddess.

St Mary Magdalene, Church - church is associated with Mary Magdalene, a symbol of spiritual wisdom and transformation.

Hackpen White Horse - We take in this view of another white horse at the end of the day as we consider why it is called the Druid’s Tumulus!
