Highlights
  • Clach an Trushal - Known as the Stone of Compassion, this is believed to be the tallest standing stone in Scotland. Above ground it stands at 5.8metres tall, is 1.83 metres wide and at its thickest point is 1.5 metres thick.
  • Butt of Lewis Lighthouse - A stop-off at the most north-westerly point in the British Isles. The lighthouse was built by David Stevenson, father of the author of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson. This area is good for viewing basking sharks and porpoises and has a small beach nearby. The area also holds a Guinness Book of Records for the highest gust recorded in the British Isles at 133.6 miles per hour in 1962
  • Gearrannan Blackhouse Village Ltd - A stop off at the restored Blackhouse Village, comprising a museum highlighting life in the 1800s on Lewis. Watch a video on community life and culture and enjoy seeing a Harris Tweed Weaver at work and a real life peat stack.
  • Callanish Standing Stones - See the stone circle which ages with the Pyramids and older than Stonehenge. Try and make sense of the reason for the stones. Visit the exhibition and enjoy a cup of tea and some cake at the visitor centre.
  • Lews Castle - Redeveloped in 2015 to bring the building back to its original state, Lews Castle was built between 1840 and 1860 by Lord and Lady Matheson, as a luxurious dwelling. Sold onto Lord Leverhulme of Unilever, the Castle, grounds, Stornoway and surrounding areas was left to the people of Stornoway in 1924, culminating in the first land owning trust in Scotland being established. The building had a museum added in the redevelopment which houses a rich history of the islands and some of the Lewis Chessmen which were discovered in a sand dune in Uig in 1831. Carved from Walrus Ivory, they are believed to have been brought to Lewis by the Vikings in the 12th Century AD.

Amazing Guide! - It was an awesome tour! So fun to have a local who grew up on the island! Alan was really knowledgeable and quite honest about what was worth seeing and what was an overpriced tourist spot. His English was fabulous (sometimes it is tough to understand the accent of some guides!) and a great sense of humour. Thanks Alan! We will look you up next time we visit!

Fabulous tour! - This was a wonderful tour and our guide Alan was very informative and fielded a myriad of questions from our group of 6 people. He was personable, knowledgeable, and truly flexible about allowing our group to make some unplanned stops when we saw something of interest. We saw all of the usual highlights and more, including a very old church, a brief stop to see alpacas and a lunch stop for amazing vegan pizza (“Crust” pizza located in a shipping container). Our day was busy but we never felt rushed. He also tried to time our stops to avoid the large tour buses which was an added bonus. We had a lovely day and would wholeheartedly recommend the tour!
