Nestled in the heart of Masuria in northern Poland, deep within the forest, lie the remnants of what was once Adolf Hitler’s headquarters. Constructed in Gierloz between 1940 and 1944, it draws visitors with its somber atmosphere and the cautionary tales held within its crumbling walls. Hitler called it the ‘Wolf’s Lair,’ a nod to his pseudonym ‘Her Wolf,’ which he used for signing articles in the 1920s.
Like many wartime sites, Hitler’s Headquarters was expertly camouflaged. The forest-concealed town comprises 200 structures, including shelters, barracks, two airports, a power plant, a railway station, air-conditioning systems, a water supply, a heating plant, and two teletype panels.
In 1944, the site was home to over 2,000 individuals. Hitler himself spent more than 800 days at the Wolf’s Lair. On July 20, 1944, Colonel Count Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, but the attempt failed. Hitler survived the blast and harshly retaliated against his adversaries.
