Additional Information

The Jewish sector in Girona, regarded as one of the best conserved in Europe, nestles in the core of the city. Brimming with historical remnants from the Roman and Medieval periods, this community, often referred to as the ‘Call’, once housed around 1,000 people during the Middle Ages, making it a vital part of Spain’s Jewish heritage. As you wander through the charming, narrow alleys of this Jewish Quarter, birthplace of Medieval Kabbalistic philosopher Nahmanides, you’ll discover locations of the city’s 3 synagogues and insights into the rituals and norms of the Jewish populace. A visit to the Museum of Jewish History offers further understanding of their lifestyle. Your tour guide will navigate you through the maze-like passageways, narrating the history of the Jewish Expulsion in 1492, an event marking the end of a 600-year coexistence. Upon completing this tour, you’ll be enlightened on the impact and legacy of Girona’s Jewish community.

Two thumbs up! - The Jewish history tour with Ona and her apprentice was fascinating. Their passion for the subject was evident from the start, as they expertly spoke about Girona's Jewish heritage and the city today. With insightful commentary and engaging anecdotes, Ona and her apprentice created a profound appreciation for this often-overlooked aspect of Girona's past. A truly enlightening experience that I highly recommend.

Not the best guide - The woman who gave the tour was nice but really didn’t know Jewish history well and told an incomplete and sometimes misleading story. Some of it appeared to be a language or translation issue and much of it was a lack of knowledge.
