Black Desert - A representative will pick up guests from their hotel in Cairo in the morning and head towards Bahariya Oasis. Upon arrival, guests will check into the hotel and enjoy lunch. Afterward, a local tour around Bahariya Oasis will commence, showcasing natural sites such as the date gardens, the salt lake, the dunes, Pyramid Mountain, and English Mountain. The day concludes with a drive to the Black Desert to set up camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Bahariya Oasis - Bahariya Oasis is one of Egypt’s most renowned and accessible oases, situated in the Western Desert approximately 370 kilometers southwest of Cairo. It is celebrated for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and mineral-rich hot springs, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, ancient artifacts, and therapeutic attractions.
Hot Springs: Bahariya boasts over a dozen hot springs, including the well-known Bir Sigam, Bir Al-Matar, and Bir El-Ghaba, famous for their therapeutic properties, with water temperatures ranging from warm to very hot.
Iron-Rich Water: The water in Bahariya is high in iron content, believed to have healing effects on certain ailments.
Surrounding Desert: The oasis is encircled by sandy dunes, black volcanic hills, and rock formations, enhancing its unique desert charm.
Bahariya Oasis Salt Lake - The salt lake in Bahariya Oasis is a distinctive natural feature that enhances the area’s unique landscape and allure. Here’s a closer look at the salt lake:
The salt lake is located near the center of Bahariya Oasis, surrounded by palm groves, date plantations, and desert terrain.
Though relatively small compared to other lakes, it forms a striking contrast against the otherwise arid desert landscape of Bahariya. Its size can vary seasonally, depending on rainfall and water levels in the oasis.
English Mountain Bahariya Oasis - The hills are known as “English Mountains” because they served as an observation point for British troops during World War I. The strategic location provided an expansive view of the surrounding desert, ideal for monitoring activities in the area.
Some historical accounts suggest that remnants from this period, such as small lookout posts, can still be found in the area.
The English Mountains have a distinctive dark coloration, primarily due to the presence of iron-rich rocks and minerals. This black hue makes them stand out in contrast to the surrounding sandy and lighter-colored desert landscape.
The hills are not particularly high but are notable for their rugged, rocky formations and volcanic origins, dating back millions of years. The high iron content in the area has also contributed to local mining activities in Bahariya.
Black Desert - Spending the night in Egypt’s Black Desert is a unique and memorable experience that combines the mystique of a rugged volcanic landscape with the serenity of an open desert sky. Located near Bahariya Oasis and often included in tours through Egypt’s Western Desert, the Black Desert is known for its dark, volcanic hills, iron-rich rocks, and expansive sands. Here’s what to expect and some key considerations for an overnight stay:
Most overnight stays in the Black Desert are organized through local tour operators based in Bahariya Oasis. They provide camping equipment, meals, and experienced guides familiar with the desert terrain.
Guests typically sleep in tents under the stars, though many choose to sleep in the open air for a more immersive experience. The camping setup usually includes basic sleeping bags, mats, and blankets to keep warm, as temperatures can drop significantly at night.
Tours generally include visits to the Black Desert, White Desert, and sometimes the Crystal Mountain.
Day 2:
White Desert - After breakfast, the journey continues with a drive to explore more of the Black Desert, visiting El Marssos Mountain, and then driving to El Hez village to see the cold spring. The tour proceeds to visit Crystal Mountain and the Aqapat area, then continues off-road to cross the valleys area, reaching the Green Spring for lunch and a glimpse of the spring from Roman times. The day ends with a drive towards the new White Desert, where the best limestone formations are found, and a campsite is set up for dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.
Valley of Agabat - The landscape is a mix of limestone cliffs, sand dunes, and striking white chalk formations. These chalky structures, shaped over millions of years by wind and erosion, give the area a mystical and alien appearance.
The valley has dramatic rock formations that seem to rise suddenly from the desert sands, with shapes that can resemble towering pillars, mushrooms, or other abstract forms.
The white and yellow sands in the valley add layers of color, creating an ethereal look at different times of day, especially at sunrise and sunset.
The Valley of Agabat is accessible by 4x4 vehicles, often as part of a desert safari tour. The challenging sandy terrain and steep dunes make it an ideal location for adventure activities, including sandboarding.
Its remote location provides a sense of seclusion and tranquility, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural desert landscape.
Crystal Mountain, Egypt - Crystal Mountain in Egypt is an intriguing geological site located between the Bahariya Oasis and the Farafra Oasis in the Western Desert. This natural formation is celebrated for its stunning crystal-like appearance and its popularity as a stop for those exploring Egypt’s deserts. Here’s a closer look at this remarkable location:
Historical Significance: Crystal Mountain was likely discovered relatively recently by modern explorers and Bedouins. Unlike Egypt’s ancient monuments, it doesn’t have historical or archaeological significance but is valued for its natural beauty.
Formation Process: The crystals were formed millions of years ago due to tectonic forces and mineral deposits. Over time, the accumulation of calcite created a large, crystal-rich ridge in the middle of the desert.
Day 3:
Cairo - After enjoying breakfast at the camp, preparations begin for the drive back to the oasis, where there may be an opportunity for a shower before taking transport back to Cairo.
White Desert - Golden Hour: The hour just after sunrise is perfect for photography. The soft, warm light enhances the textures of the limestone formations, casting beautiful shadows and revealing the intricate details of the desert landscape.
Silhouettes: As the sun rises, the unique formations of the White Desert—like mushrooms and pyramidal rocks—cast dramatic silhouettes against the brightening sky, offering stunning opportunities for capturing the desert’s mysterious shapes.
Wake-Up Time: Tour guides generally wake visitors before sunrise, providing tea or coffee as part of the camping experience. Visitors often gather in a designated spot to enjoy the sunrise together, making it a communal and shared moment of awe.
Cultural Connection: Bedouin guides often share stories or local legends about the desert while visitors watch the sunrise, adding cultural richness to the experience.
Peaceful Solitude: Many visitors take a moment of solitude at sunrise, reflecting in the calm and beauty of the moment.
