• Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Located in the citadel of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) in Cairo, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha (1805–1848), the founder of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. Built on the site of former Mamluk palaces, it is also known as the “Alabaster Mosque” due to its marble cladding. The mosque’s twin minarets, each 84 meters tall, are the tallest in Egypt.
• Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As - The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As is the oldest surviving mosque in Egypt and Africa. General ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, founded Egypt’s first Islamic capital, Fustat, in AD 640. A year later, he established the mosque, named after himself, on behalf of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab.
• Synagogue Ben Ezra - Nestled in the winding streets of Coptic Cairo, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is the oldest Jewish temple in Cairo, dating back to the 9th century AD. Although it now serves primarily as a tourist attraction, it holds significant historical importance in Judaism, especially after the departure of Egypt’s Jewish community in the 1950s.
• El-Moez Street - While not as famous as the pyramids, El-Moez Street is essential for experiencing Cairo’s history and appreciating its stunning medieval Islamic architecture and art.
