Constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom between 2600 and 2500 BC, the area also includes several temples, cemeteries, and the remnants of a workers’ village.
• Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The complex of Khufu’s pyramid includes a valley temple, which is now buried under the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Although diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, the site remains unexcavated.
• Khafre’s Pyramid - The complex of Khafre’s pyramid features a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. Several statues of Khafre were found in the valley temple, with many discovered in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
• Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
• Great Sphinx - Dating back to the reign of King Khafre, the Sphinx saw the addition of a new temple dedicated to Hauron-Haremakhet by Amenhotep II during the New Kingdom, with later rulers adding to the structure.
