An Incredible Three-Day Tour of Cairo and Giza - While traveling to Egypt for a wedding in late May 2024, my husband and I, along with four non-couple friends from Canada and the U.S. were amazingly fortunate to be connected with Sam (and Peter, our driver!) for an amazing three days of touring around Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza.
From the first moment we were welcomed and felt at ease with Sam. He has such a warm, authentic disposition and deep, life-long knowledge that extends beyond the traditional bounds of Egyptology. In a field of study with so many theories and unknowns, Sam is skilled in his ability to describe widely accepted theories and those still being debated by Egyptologists around the world. Even better, he has a knack for explaining the nuances of local history and culture in a way that makes engagement both accessible and enjoyable. Not to mention his professional photography background, which meant he knew all the spots to get the best photos!
Our group was comprised of experienced international travelers, though this was the first trip to Egypt for most of us, and we had a packed itinerary covering all the major spots—Cairo Citadel, the Old Town, National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, The Egyptian Museum, The Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and even the partially-opened Grand Egyptian Museum. Our time at each site was an excellent balance of curated tour and self-driven exploration; something that isn't always the case with "guided" tours. We always had time for admin stops—bathroom and lunch breaks—and appreciated benefits like leaving our extraneous items in the van during museum visits. Be sure to bring water everywhere; we each had a bottle (or two) every day.
At no point during our experience did we feel unsafe, concerned, rushed, or uncomfortable; in fact, traveling with Sam resulted in the opposite effect. He helped us to anticipate the rules and customs of each new stop (whether photos are allowed, if you should cover your shoulders or remove your shoes, etc.) meaning we felt more confident and prepared, and knew we were with someone we trusted should there be concerns from professional staff or overly-engaged vendors; neither of which were ever an issue. However, it's important to acknowledge that we were collectively conscious of forming a positive relationship with Sam (and others who we met) by building on mutual respect and engagement. Bringing good energy and intention into your experience changes everything for the better.
With so many things to see it would have been easy to feel overwhelmed in a new country, but each day was even more enjoyable than the last and by the end, it was difficult to say goodbye. When you strike a balance within a group who travels well together, the unplanned times like getting stuck in Cairo traffic, or a quick pit stop for shawarma and ful while jamming to crowd-favorite Arabic songs become cherished memories.
After three days we'd lost track of how many friendly locals and experts paused to tell us how fortunate we were to be exploring with Sam—and we couldn't have agreed more. We're already planning all the things still left to see in Egypt, and we'll certainly be reaching out (with plenty of lead time) in hopes of working with Sam again when we return. We can't recommend him enough!

Don’t tour Egypt without Egyptologist Sam! - Our recent trip to Egypt was awe inspiring and a life changing event. It was invaluable that our tour of Egypt was led by the incomparable Egyptologist Osama “Sam” Nasef. Sam is extremely knowledgable and passionate about Egypt’s long history.
In his presentations , Sam demonstrates his passion, depth of knowledge, and his love for his country. We were very fortunate to have had Sam as our tour guide.
Anyone contemplating a trip to Egypt should seek out Sam as their guide as you will be in great hands and likely make a lifelong friend as we have. We hope to reconnect with Sam in the future as our limited time in Egypt left us wanting more. Bless you my Bedouin Brother!
