Highlights
  • Gjirokaster - Departing from Tirana at 8:00, we will journey to Gjirokastra, located 230 km away. This town is renowned as “a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of the large estate.” As we travel through the deep South of Albania, the road is flanked by fertile fields, a testament to the region’s rich agricultural heritage. We will also pass by the Vjosa River, one of the last wild rivers in Albania and the Balkans.
  • Gjirokastra Bazaar - Upon entering the city, it becomes clear that Gjirokastra is unique. The historical area begins at a main square named after Cerciz Topulli, a notable Albanian patriot of the 19th century. Here, cobblestone streets descend from the heights of the castle.

Dating back to the 17th century during the Ottoman era, the bazaar has been the city’s vibrant heart, bustling with economic activity and social interaction. It was a hub where news and gossip spread quickly, and people gathered to buy, sell, or relax with a coffee. It was also a central meeting place for families arranging marriages.

  • Gjirokaster Castle - As we wander through the Bazaar, we will arrive at Gjirokastra Fortress. Perched atop a hill in a naturally fortified position, this was the city’s original settlement. The castle is linked to the captivating Legend of Argjiro, a young princess who sacrificed herself, earning it the title of the Crown of the City. Heavily restored in the 19th century, it has served as a fortress and prison under various regimes. Beyond its historical significance, it offers stunning views of the stone city sprawled across the steep terrain.
  • Rruga Palorto - The tour continues to one of the city’s most renowned areas. Here, you will find the family homes of Enver Hoxha, the former Communist leader, and his neighbor, Ismail Kadare, Albania’s most famous modern writer. Both figures are pivotal in 20th-century Albanian politics and literature. Before leaving this area via “The Path of Mad People” and its intriguing story, we will visit a particularly interesting house.
  • The Blue Eye - Our final stop is at one of Albania’s most stunning natural wonders. Near the village of Finiq, the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a water spring that epitomizes Albania’s natural beauty. The vibrant blue water is so clear you can see to the bottom, and the sunlight creates a magical effect, perfect for photos or a quick swim. The spring is a short hike from the parking area, and there is a nearby café where you can refresh yourself.

PERFECT EXPERIENCE - What. A. Fantastic. Tour company is Go As Local! Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye are beautiful places, so you’ll have fun being there. But doing it with the right people around you makes it even better. My private guide Erjon knew all the best places and was very knowledgeable on the history and stories of certain places. GoAsLocal is the best! - Daniel is an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable tourist guide, he constantly informed us along the way and throughout the tour, corrected things we knew wrong, and since we were close in age, we established an incredibly warm friendship, made jokes along the way. The places we visited were very nice and his knowledge was very good. He even corrected us the information we knew wrong about the places we visited before. I can say that it is the most satisfied tour I will ever take. They deserve the money. Thank you, Daniel.

Perfect balance of cityscape and nature - I text Andi and said I am free is there any chance of a tour to the blue eye. The bonus about Andi and his team is that they make the tour unique and tailored made on your interests. This time I had the pleasure of Xhulio's company and we had a very interesting trip discussing history. Our trip down south was very comfortable as due to the showery weather the road was quieter than normal. Xhulio was watching the weather to ensure we had our visit in between the showers. Syri I Katër is a beautiful park. I can imagine that at the height of summer it is not as pleasant as it was for me as there is no shade. The blue eye is beautiful and the waterways are so clear. The park is peaceful and safe. We then continued to Gijriocaster which is a city worth a visit as it is unique and different from other cities. The castle / fortress is a mark of strength and an insight into Albania. The city of stone is also a talking point and worth exploring. Andi and his team always ensure a great day out and an unique adventure.
