Setting Sail from Gloucester

As a former professional surfer, my life has always revolved around the ocean. Living in the Caribbean, I spend my days chasing waves and exploring the vibrant marine life that surrounds me. So, when I heard about the 7 Seas Whale Watch in Gloucester, Massachusetts, I knew I had to experience it for myself. The idea of witnessing the majestic whales in their natural habitat was too enticing to pass up.

Arriving in Gloucester, I was immediately charmed by the town’s picturesque harbor and the bustling activity of the working waterfront. The Privateer IV, the vessel for our adventure, was docked and ready to set sail. With a capacity of 300 passengers but only booking 150, the boat promised a comfortable and intimate experience. As we departed, the sights and sounds of Gloucester faded into the distance, and the open sea beckoned.

The Thrill of the Chase

The anticipation of spotting whales was palpable among the passengers. Our guide, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic marine biologist, shared fascinating insights about the marine life we were about to encounter. As we cruised towards the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary, the guide pointed out various landmarks, lighthouses, and even some playful seals along the way.

The ocean was calm, and the sun was shining—a perfect day for whale watching. After about 90 minutes of cruising, the excitement reached its peak as we spotted our first whale. The guide’s voice crackled over the speakers, directing our attention to a humpback whale breaching in the distance. Cameras clicked, and gasps of awe filled the air as the whale gracefully arched its back and disappeared beneath the waves.

A Dance with Giants

For the next hour, we were treated to a spectacular display of nature’s grandeur. We witnessed over 30 minke, humpback, and finback whales, each one more breathtaking than the last. The guide shared the names of some of the whales, like Salt, Perseid, and Tracer, adding a personal touch to the experience.

As a surfer, I’m no stranger to the power and beauty of the ocean, but seeing these magnificent creatures up close was a humbling reminder of the vastness and wonder of the sea. The crew’s dedication to ensuring we had the best possible experience was evident, as they extended the trip to give us more time with the whales.

As we made our way back to Gloucester, the boat was filled with a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure. The experience left me with a renewed appreciation for the ocean and its inhabitants, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such a remarkable spectacle.
