Arrival and First Impressions

As the plane touched down in Kigali, I felt a familiar thrill of anticipation. Africa has always held a special place in my heart, and this time, I was here for an adventure that promised to be unlike any other. The Virunga Volcano and Gorilla Tour was calling, and I was ready to answer.

The journey from Kigali to the Virunga National Park was a scenic drive that took us through the lush landscapes of Rwanda. Crossing the border into the Democratic Republic of Congo, I was filled with a sense of awe and respect for the land that is home to some of the world’s most endangered species. Our first night was spent at the Kibumba Tented Camp, nestled within the park. The accommodations were comfortable, and the staff’s commitment to sustainability was evident in every detail.

Face to Face with Gorillas

The next morning, we set out early for the gorilla tracking experience. As a wildlife photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing many incredible creatures, but nothing prepared me for the moment I stood face to face with a mountain gorilla silverback. The sheer size and presence of these magnificent animals were humbling.

Our guide led us through the dense forest, sharing insights about the gorillas’ behavior and the ongoing conservation efforts to protect them. The experience was both thrilling and poignant, a reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife preservation. Spending an hour with the gorilla family was a profound experience, one that reinforced my commitment to promoting sustainable travel and conservation.

The Ascent of Mount Nyiragongo

The adventure continued with a hike up Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano with the world’s largest lava lake. The trek was challenging, but the breathtaking views and the camaraderie among fellow travelers made every step worthwhile. As we reached the summit, the sight of the glowing lava lake was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Spending the night at the crater rim was an experience I’ll never forget. The cold air, the starry sky, and the distant rumble of the volcano created an atmosphere of raw, untamed beauty. It was a reminder of the power and majesty of nature, and the importance of preserving these wild places for future generations.

As I descended the volcano the next morning, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such wonders. The Virunga Volcano and Gorilla Tour was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of discovery and a call to action for sustainable travel and conservation.
