Additional Information

The medieval town of Gondar is located about 748 km from Addis Ababa Following the demise of Lalibela toward the end of the 13th century, Ethiopia had no national capital for hundreds of years. The emperors had to keep on the move on constant campaigns to safeguard their vast empire and ensure allegiance to their rule. For their seat of government, they had to make do with what are known in the historical literature as ‘roving tent capitals’. Tired of this migratory and nomadic lifestyle of so many of his forefathers, Emperor Fassiledes founded Gondar in 1636 and had the first and most magnificent of the castles built. Succeeding Emperors made their own additions mostly within the same castle compound. Although the exact date of construction of this imposing edifice is not known, a Yemeni ambassador visiting Gondar in 1648 described it as “one of the most marvelous of buildings”.

My tour to Gondar - At a very short notice, while in Addis I planned a trip to Gondar through Aman. Despite being busy with a big delegation, Aman was extremely helpful and patient with me and gave me multiple options. I went ahead with his recommendation and it turned out to be a wonderful trip. He took care of everything including flight tickets, hotel stay, guide, transport etc. I took flight from Addis to Bahir Dar from where I was driven straight to Gondar. Enroute I was shown the famous Lake Tana and the Nile Waterfall. The driver was a senior guide and hence during my journey to Gondar, I learnt so much about Ethiopia, first hand from an Ethiopian. Next day my guided trip to castles and other locations gave me a very good understanding of Ethiopia's history and traditions. Thanks a lot Aman.

Ethiopia, Gondar's most famous places with Samuel Tadesse - The last days of September I traveled throughout the north of Ethiopia. In Gondar Samuel Tadesse guided me throughout the most famous places of Gondar: Fassil Ghebbi, Fasilides' Bath and Debre Birhan Seleassie. King Samuel was an enthusiastic, helpful and knowledgeable guide. I had a very pleasant day with him as my guide. He even took me out to a club for traditional music and dancing in the evening. That was very nice and I enjoyed it very much. I definitely recommend him if you are looking for a guide in Gondar. email is [email protected] or +251 980 65 388

Memorable experience with a knowledgeable guide - The tour across 2 days was the right length and very insightful, going into detail about Gondar's rich history. The tour guide was very friendly and proud of his town, always willing to talk and share about all sorts of things. A trip to a local bar with traditional dancing was also thrown in to cap off a nice stay. Will 100% use again.
