Paronella Park’s story began with José Paronella, a man from Catalonia, Spain, who migrated to Australia in 1913. Over the following eleven years, José worked laboriously, initially engaging in sugar cane harvesting before buying, improving, and selling off sugar cane farms. In 1924, José returned to Spain to marry Margarita in 1925, their return journey to Australia served as their honeymoon. José’s dream was to erect an extraordinary castle, a concept in its own uniqueness given this Spanish inspired castle is a first in Australia.
José went on to select an exquisite part of Australia and thus, Paronella Park was established. This astounding park was built on a 5ha land, located adjacent to Mena Creek Falls. Here, he constructed his castle, picnic facility near the waterfalls, tennis courts, bridges, a tunnel, and enriched it with a stunning variety of 7,500 tropical plants and trees which today has flourished into a lush rainforest.
