- Gorkha Museum - Many visitors to Nepal admit they have never heard of the name “Gorkha”. Historically, Nepal was known as “Gorkhana”, a name that dates back to the 1760s when King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha unified the nation. His conquest brought about a common language and a unified culture.
The city of Gorkha was his starting point. Perched on a high hill overlooking a lush green valley, his castle/fortress provided the king with a panoramic view of his surroundings. To the north, the majestic snowcapped Himalayas can be seen, with Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world, standing out as the crown jewel. Visitors can explore the Gorkha Museum, which houses ancient metals, coins, weapons, and artifacts from the royal families of Gorkha.
- Gorakha Nath Temple Gorkha - As the morning sun rises over Gorkha, the city stands on a high hill, overlooking the rivers and fields below, like a sentinel guarding the land. In ancient times, its kings were formidable, and from their lineage came a great king in the 1700s who unified Nepal, preventing it from becoming a British colony.
Gorkha was the capital of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, a warrior king who, with his sword, united the numerous small kingdoms scattered across Nepal in the mid-1700s. The king had the vision, courage, and leadership to dominate a strong-willed people.
The city of Gorkha is built atop a high hill, offering a commanding view of its surroundings. At the summit is Gorkha Durbar, the king’s great fortress, where he could survey his domain. To the north are the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas, with Mt. Manaslu, rising to 8,163 meters (26,781 ft.), revered by Tibetans as a god and known as the “spirit mountain”. To the west and south lie fertile valleys nourished by fast-flowing mountain rivers.
The Gorkha Historical Tour takes you to the top to see the fortress, palace, and holy site that are the pride of the people. You’ll be amazed at how such a fortress was built on steep terrain. In the city below, stroll the flagstone streets and visit the national museum, which details the incredible history of Nepal’s mightiest king, whose family ruled until 2008.
The devastating earthquake of 2015 affected the Gorkha Durbar, and reconstruction efforts are ongoing.
