Fab restaurant experience at Afrikan Prominence, Swellendam, South Africa - Spending a night alone travelling through Swellendam, the thought of yet another "fine dining" experience of baked camambert, risotto or pasta - the go-to's for vegetarians - I have to say left me feeling a little sad. Enter Afrikan Prominence on my google search. The foodie photos of morogo and umngqusho promised to satisfy all the comfort cravings in me. I loved the sincerity and care shown by the restaurant hosts, the flexibility in catering to my non-standard order, the right amount of presence and attention. The music was prefect for my mood (black women artists from the 50s and 60s, along with Afro soul). And the food was really good. Well spiced morogo alongside plain and simple vegetable; creamy mngqusho; ginger tea with add-your-own herbs and spices. Generous portions. Inexpensive. I sat reading the philosophical musings of owner Kagisho Molema (a book from the adjacent library room), that left me feeling hopeful about the world. What a lovely evening! I hope to be travelling through Swellendam again, just for a reprise.
