• TCI Junkanoo Museum - The origin of the word Junkanoo is unclear. Some believe it derives from the French “L’inconnu” (meaning the unknown), referring to the masks worn by paraders; others suggest “junk enow,” a Scottish term meaning “junk enough” in reference to the parades; or “John Canoe,” the name of an African tribal chief who insisted on celebrating with his people even after being enslaved in the West Indies. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, Junkanoo has been a celebration of the salt harvest trade. When merchant ships arrived to trade goods for harvested salt, islanders celebrated with the beating of drums, pots and pans, the scraping of saws, scrub boards, shaking of maracas, cowbells, and the blowing of conch horns and whistles.
