From Waves to Volcanoes: A Surfer’s Day in Nicaragua
When the waves are calm, and the surfboards are resting, I find myself drawn to new adventures. This time, it was the allure of Nicaragua’s culture and natural wonders that called to me. Join me as I recount a day filled with vibrant cities, fiery volcanoes, and unforgettable experiences.
Sunrise to Sunset: A Day in Nicaragua
The day began before the sun had even considered rising. At 5:30 am, I found myself being whisked away from the Occidental Tamarindo, ready to embark on an adventure that I hadn’t even realized was on my bucket list. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless mornings chasing the perfect wave, but this time, the call of the ocean was replaced by the allure of Nicaragua’s rich culture and natural wonders.
Our first stop was Rivas City for breakfast, a quaint town that offered a taste of local life. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, a reminder of the simple pleasures that make travel so rewarding. As we continued our journey, the landscape unfolded like a painting, with lush greenery and distant volcanoes setting the scene for what was to come.
Granada: A Colonial Gem
Arriving in Granada felt like stepping back in time. This Spanish colonial city, nestled between volcanoes and Lake Nicaragua, is a vibrant tapestry of history and culture. The colorful houses and remarkable churches stood as testaments to the city’s storied past.
One of the highlights was a visit to Bate Bate Chocolate, where the owner, with his infectious energy, introduced us to the art of chocolate-making. Sampling the rich, velvety chocolate was an experience in itself, a sweet reminder of the joys of travel. Nearby, Sonrises Café offered a chance to indulge in premium coffee at a fraction of the price, a treat for any coffee lover.
A horse-drawn carriage ride through the cobblestone streets of Granada was the perfect way to soak in the city’s charm. For a small fee, it was a journey through history, with each turn revealing a new story. As the day unfolded, I found myself captivated by the city’s beauty, a place where time seemed to stand still.
The Fiery Heart of Masaya
As the sun began its descent, we made our way to Masaya Volcano National Park. The anticipation built as we approached the volcano, one of the few in the world where you can drive to the top. Standing at the edge, gazing into the glowing red magma, was a moment of awe and wonder.
The experience was made even more memorable by our guide, Miguel, whose energy and passion for Nicaragua were infectious. Despite the rain that threatened to dampen our spirits, Miguel’s enthusiasm never wavered. He introduced us to Atol de elote, a traditional corn drink, at the last market we visited, a fitting end to a day filled with new experiences.
As we made our way back to the hotel, the memories of the day lingered like the warm Nicaraguan breeze. This one-day experience had opened my eyes to the beauty and culture of a country that I now long to explore further. Nicaragua, with its fiery volcanoes and colonial charm, had captured my heart, and I knew I would return to uncover more of its secrets.
