Our family’s love for historical cities led us to Graz, where the Universalmuseum Joanneum Pass unlocked a world of cultural treasures. Join us as we explore the city’s rich history and vibrant culture, from the opulent Schloss Eggenberg to the fascinating Styrian Armoury.
A Journey Through Time: Discovering Graz with the Universalmuseum Joanneum Pass
Our family has always been drawn to the allure of historical cities, and Graz, with its rich tapestry of culture and history, was no exception. The Universalmuseum Joanneum Pass offered us a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of Styria’s cultural heritage, granting us access to 12 museums and sites. As we embarked on this adventure, we were eager to explore the treasures that awaited us.
The Allure of Schloss Eggenberg
Our first stop was the magnificent Schloss Eggenberg, a Baroque palace that seemed to whisper stories of the past. As we strolled through the lush park, we were greeted by the resident peacocks, their vibrant plumage adding a splash of color to the serene landscape. The children were fascinated, chasing after the birds with gleeful laughter.
Inside the palace, the state rooms were a marvel to behold. Each room was a testament to the opulence of a bygone era, with intricate frescoes and ornate furnishings. The highlight for our family was the Planetary Room, where the ceiling depicted the cosmos in stunning detail. It was a perfect blend of art and science, sparking curiosity and wonder in our young explorers.
A Step Back in Time at the Styrian Armoury
Next, we ventured to the Landeszeughaus, the Styrian Armoury, a treasure trove of medieval weaponry and armor. As a museum curator, I was particularly excited to see how history was brought to life in this unique setting. The sheer volume of suits of armor and weapons was astounding, and the kids were thrilled to see the knights’ armor up close.
The museum’s interactive exhibits were a hit with our children, allowing them to engage with history in a hands-on way. They tried on replica helmets and learned about the evolution of weaponry through the ages. It was a captivating experience that made history tangible and exciting for the whole family.
Exploring the Modern and the Traditional
Our journey through Graz wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the Kunsthaus, a striking modern art museum known for its ever-changing exhibits. While the current exhibition was not to our taste, the building itself, with its futuristic architecture, was a sight to behold. We took a moment to appreciate the contrast between the old and the new, a theme that resonated throughout our trip.
After a day of exploration, we indulged in authentic Styrian cuisine on Franziskanerstraße. The hearty dishes were a delightful end to our cultural journey, offering a taste of local flavors that left us wanting more.
As we boarded the train back to Vienna, we reflected on our time in Graz. The Universalmuseum Joanneum Pass had opened the doors to a world of discovery, allowing us to experience the rich history and vibrant culture of this charming city. It was a journey that enriched our understanding of the past and inspired us to continue exploring the wonders of Europe.
