Anna, Duchess of Bedford, created this meal to bridge the gap between an early lunch and a late dinner, which she found to be a lull during many country house gatherings.

Over time, Afternoon Tea became a meal steeped in etiquette and unique customs, featuring silver teapots, fine china, cake stands, starched napkins, and the debate over whether to add milk before or after the tea.

The golden age of Afternoon Tea was during the British Empire, when the ‘Sahib’ and his family, having had an early lunch, would wait until the cooler late evening for dinner. It was during this period that fashionable hotels embraced the tradition of serving classic afternoon and Devonshire cream teas.
