Additional Information

This is the Original Aldgate East Jack the Ripper tour that has been operating since 1982. Our start point means that, within seconds of setting out, you are exploring the cobbled alleys and atmospheric old streets that have changed little since Jack the Ripper prowled their shadows. Our guides, Richard Jones, John Bennett, Angie Norman, Philip Hutchinson and Jeremy John are experts on the case and have between them written more than ten acclaimed books on the Jack The Ripper mystery. They are able to present you with a detailed account of the crimes that shook the world in 1888. However, they present those facts in a dramatic and entertaining fashion that is both entertaining and inspiring, and which helps bring the history of the crimes to vivid life. From the start, it is as though you are a part of the Victorian police investigation, as you sift the evidence, examine the facts, and debate the crimes and arrive at your own conclusions.

  • The Tube Station At The start is not wheelchair accessible.

Philip made Jack the Ripper come to life - I just wanted to send a quick note to say how great Philip was on our tour. I could not believe all of the detailed information he provided. He was also funny and made the tour an event we will never forget.

Recommended (ask for Philip!) - A recommended tour! The presentation by our guide Philip (with one -l) Hutchison bordered on standup comedy, but he was extremely knowledgeable and had tremendous grip on the vast trove of facts and literature on the Ripper. It was especially refreshing to hear him tell the facts without any reference to unsupported claims and sensationalist nonsense. No lurid tales about royal conspiracies, century-old DNA or dubious diaries. His scepticism is an example for other guides. Again, highly recommended!

An exciting travel back in time - The tour started on time, and although there was a bit of rain in the end, we finished within 2 hours. Philip is a very knowledgeable and humorous and responsible guide. He showed a couple of pictures comparing old street to current, and pointed out where exactly the crimes had happened. He made such vivid description of the cases that gave me a nightmare after the trip (Thanks for all the lively performances and sound effects you made Philip!) This is a great night city walk opportunity if you want to know more about Jack the Ripper and street life in Victorian age London!

Amazing tour - definitely would recommend! - We had our tour with Philip who was a wonderful guide. He made the tour very interesting even if some of the spots were lost due to new buildings. He handed out pictures of the old buildings and the streets and even showed some pictures of the victims. That helped a lot with the visualisation of the old London. The tour was two hours long and the time flew by. I could have listened to Philip another two hours. I would highly recommend this tour!

Well researched and very informative - Great Value for Money! - We got to the meeting place and after checking in were sent across the road to wait in a little park away from the road, which was a nice touch. There were around 40 people and we were split between two guides. Our guide was PHILIP (with one L!), who was friendly and welcoming - he was wearing a very "extra" hoodie with a map printed on it, which was a little more casual than we had expected, but honestly it didn't matter what he looked like because his knowledge and presentation was amazing! I took a while to choose which tour to do, as there were so many and they all have very similar names. We came across at least 8 other tour groups on our journey and there were a few battles over who got to use which location - it must be said that Philip was very respectful of other groups and almost always won the best spot for our group. Everything I knew about JTR was from the Johnny Depp film "From Hell", which apparently took a lot of liberties and I left the tour knowing so much and with an interest to know more. At every stop Philip would pass around, or show from the front a number of large images of things such as what the location used to look like or the place that a body / evidence was found. I found this extremely interesting. There were also pictures of the victims and their injuries post mortem, which were shocking, but we were given the choice whether to look or not, which I liked. It's a tricky thing, dark tourism and I must the subject matter was handled very respectfully. The tour was 2 hours long and at a leisurely pace, which I found easy even after walking around the city all day! I would recommend getting there in good time and taking a drink with you, but I'm not your mum. I would highly recommend this tour. Thanks Philip! :)

This is a must-do if you're interested in London's darker side - The tour was great, Philip had a huge amount of knowledge and was interesting to listen to. Although some of the spots were lost inside new buildings, Philip handed out some photos from the times. It made the stories much easier to visualise.

Fantastic guide and experience. This is THE tour you need to go on if interested in Jack the Ripper & the old East End - Philip (with one L!) was a fantastic guide right from the meeting point of the tour. My two Australian friends had come all the way to London, and I suggested this tour for something a bit different. We went on Monday night as we had always planned but by mistake, they had booked for the Tuesday night, this was no issue at all, he could fit us in, we were relieved as they would not have been able to attend the next evening. From the start it was clear Philip was not only knowledgeable about the ripper and the murders but passionate about them too. He also took time to make sure of the English ability of people in the group (he would have slowed down for non-native speakers of English). I really liked that he had photos of what the locations looked like in 1888 and of course of the victims (which you did not have to look at if you didn't want to). I did a Jack the ripper tour 10+ years ago and I was surprised how many rival tours are happening at the same time nowadays. We were very lucky to have been on Philip's tour I am positive our group learnt the most on that cold Monday evening. I highly recommend this tour and Philip as a guide. I now want to learn more about the ripper and do the walking tour again.
