Great experience. Ivo our guide was the best. - Ivo was our guide and he was fantastic. It wasn’t only for his knowledge and expertise but also because he put so much passion on everything he was telling us, that it was impossible not to get excited about everything. The tour was 2,5h long and it felt very quick. The entire family had an amazing experience. We were 2 adults and 2 kids.

There's more to this natural history museum than dinosaurs - Our guide Becky, was energising, her enthusiasm and professionalism really made our visit. Getting on a small group tour is an investment in expanding your mind. Sure, you could get an audio guide.. but the content is overwhelming. The museum is huge and there is just so much to see. A guide does an edit for you and walks you through the complexity. If you have special interest they'll try to accommodate you in a bespoke service that no pre-made tour can match. The tour takes the morning but would recommend planning to stay within the Museum for lunch and going back on your own to revisit some of the galleries. The tour didn't ever feel rushed but it had, of necessity, to be selective. Allowing your over-taxed brain a respite over lunch and then returning for another sortie into the collection is a sound strategy. None of the guides I'd read actually mentioned that the building designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1865 is a marvel. The brief of building 'a cathedral to nature' was delivered. From the gargoyles on the roof to the animals, birds, reptiles and fish that cavort, perch, run and swim around the pillars, pilasters and walls not to mention, the 96 panels of botanical illustrations that decorate the ceiling of the main hall; the terracotta of the structure itself is an homage to nature.

Worthwhile - We did the museum with Matilda the tour guide from Babylon Tours, who was absolutely fantastic - she was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, everyone in our group (family, friends and godson) enjoyed the experience more due to Matilda. I would highly recommend doing the private tour, you get to skip the line and then get intricate details about some of the key parts of the museum. The only let down for me was we did not get to see the dinosaur section, however we understood why as it is obviously one of the most popular parts and the queue alone to get in was extensive.
