Highlights
  • Church of St. Bartholomew the Great - The tragic tale of an elusive serial killer who first took the life of a 6-year-old girl, and then, seven years later, claimed another 7-year-old girl inside Barbican Station! Your guide, Declan, delves into the similarities between the cases and profiles the killer.
  • Holy Sepulchre London - The dark economics of the deceased. Grave-robbing and serial killing.
Clue: The doctors at St Bartholomew’s Hospital were willing to deal with the lowest of the low.
  • Old Bailey - The world’s most renowned court: The Central Criminal Court, also known as The Old Bailey.

Two serial killers had their trials here.

First, one who appeared here twice and sent an innocent man to his death before later confessing to multiple murders of women.

Then, the grim story of another who murdered 13 women and instilled terror for over five years.

Later in the tour, I discuss two other serial killers whose trials took place here. One who murdered 15 boys and men, and another who might be the most dangerous woman in the world.

  • Printer Street - A lighter moment on the tour…

Declan wants your vote on the scariest horror movies of all time.

Declan reveals the ‘Top Ten’ votes from 23 years of the tour, including a film in the ‘Top Ten’ that most of you are unaware of.

Even more intriguingly, the film has been recommended by 2,000 men, but not a single woman!

Also, Declan’s personal recommendation: a cult classic horror film, 60 years old, that almost none of you have seen. And it’s free to watch on YouTube.

  • Red Lion Court - Experience a dramatic, immersive account of a little-known Victorian serial killer who murdered on two continents and lived here.

This true story, with numerous twists, would be perfect for a movie, yet it has never been made into one.

The story concludes with a question based on what you’ve just heard, which very few people can answer correctly…

  • Hare Place - It’s Jack the Ripper time. We visit the location, just off Fleet Street, where my Jack the Ripper suspect lived, and hear a detailed explanation of why I believe this man was Jack the Ripper. (He has an entire chapter in my ‘Bloody London’ book.)

Let’s see how good you are at profiling…

Also, in this Jack the Ripper section of the tour is the toughest question of the entire tour. Answer this particular question correctly, and you will be on the ‘Roll of Honour’ of ‘The Blood and Tears Walk’.

Only one person out of every 500 attendees can answer this question correctly!

  • St. Dunstan In The West - The narrow, dingy, isolated alley we enter here may be the creepiest place you’ve ever been. And I am not kidding…

We conduct a psychic experiment here—it’s a murder scene—and you hear about a pair of devious serial killers who operated in this area.

If you are psychic, you will NOT like this place. I’ve seen tough men shaken by the atmosphere here, especially during the darker months.

Warning: This is NOT a pleasant place. And you will feel it.

  • Royal Courts of Justice - This is your section. I won’t spoil what that means, but it is always interesting, and sometimes mind-boggling and jaw-dropping.
  • Portugal Street - I mentioned them earlier. These are two other serial killers whose trials were at the Central Criminal Court.

One who murdered 15 boys and men.

The other serial killer may well be the most dangerous woman in the world.

  • Princess Louise - We end at the wonderful Princess Louise pub, famous for its beautiful Victorian decor.

However, after the final serial killer story of the tour, you might hesitate to enter this pub!

I will tell you about a well-known British serial killer’s truly horrific behavior. I can guarantee you don’t know this, despite all the books and documentaries about this person.

How do I know this information? Because it was told to me by the head of forensics involved in the case of this serial killer. He attended my tour!

After this final story, Declan will sell copies of his best-selling book ‘Bloody London’ for £10 cash or PayPal.

Declan signs each book with a personal message.

This tour is certified 12+, indicating that it is suitable only for individuals who are 12 years old and above due to the thrilling and unsettling tales that it encompasses. After attending the tour, you will gain a wealth of knowledge - albeit, a newfound caution…

Opting for the ‘Tour plus Book’ package grants you a personally autographed edition of Declan McHugh’s top-selling ‘Bloody London’, a riveting compilation of nearly 200 pages delving into the sinister elements of London’s history.

It is worth noting that the content of the book diverges greatly from that of the tour, with each offering unique insights. So far, the book has a sales record of 8,500 copies and has garnered superb reviews on Amazon.

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • A maximum of 20 people per booking
  • Operates in all weather condition so dress appropriately
  • MINIMUM age is 12 years. This is strictly enforced.
  • Children are 12-14 years old. Adults are 15+.
  • You MUST add 20 minutes extra travelling time, due to constant Underground train delays
  • I would seriously consider choosing a different Tour if you have mobility/significant health issues. It’s a fairly brisk pace – it has to be to cover 10 serial killers in two hours - and we cover 2 miles (3.2 km). And in Summer it can be hot all through the two hours. Truthfully (and quite apart from the subject matter), this Tour will not be suitable for everyone because of the distance and the reasonably fast pace. This Tour is also not recommended for people in their 70s because, as I said, it’s quite fast-paced and we cover about 2 miles =3.2 kms.
  • Don’t attend if you are feeling unwell and have a temperature with a new persistent cough
Location
Barbican
Aldersgate Street
I meet you directly opposite the ONLY exit at Barbican underground station, just 6 metres (20 feet) away from the only exit. Look for the black and red sign, saying 'The Blood and Tears Walk', on my rucksack on the ground.

Surprisingly brilliant. - Really interesting and informative. Declan knows so much and puts his knowledge across in an interesting and theatrical way. Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, my husband is the serial killer fan. Going to do the Shakespeare walk with him next time we’re up from wales.

US Professor Gives Declan McHugh A+!!! - I am a university professor in the United States who teaches criminology. I am traveling on study abroad with 70 college students. I took my criminology class on the tour. I devote part of my lectures to serial killers and the fan lore. We had a fantastic time on the trip. I learned about UK serial killers with whom I was not familiar. The tour was a good mix of education and fun. Also, his book Bloody London, also has self-guided walking tours of other crime sites. We discussed what we learned on the tour in class the next day, and watched a 'unique' police interview provided by Declan with a London woman serial killer. Great time and will bring next year's students on the tour, as well.

Amazing Tour - Excellent! Amazing! Unforgettable! Declan was extremely knowledgeable, engaging and funny. Though I live in London and worked in the City for years, I was not aware of its gruesome history. Highly recommend this tour with Declan.

Dancing in the Dark...with Declan - I'm in London from USA, teaching a criminal psychology course here this month (July, 2024), and went with my class members on the evening tour with guide Declan McHugh. It was a phenomenal experience. Declan has been hosting this tour for many years (23, I believe) and it shows. He's extremely knowledgeable about the topic of serial murder and London-based cases, and he conveys his knowledge in a way that is both highly informative and highly entertaining. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in criminal behavior and historic events in the great old city of London.

An incredible experience of entertainment and enrichment! - Declan was an incredible tour guide who provided us with equal parts entertainment and historical knowledge. Despite our group being surprised by a torrential downpour for the last 30 minutes of the tour, he managed to keep all 40 of us engaged and enthusiastic until the very end. I couldn't recommend him highly enough!

Truly immersive, a must do when visiting London - Bought as a gift for my birthday and had been looking forward to it for almost 2 months. Starting at Barbican station, Declan generates an immersive atmosphere that allows your mind to travel back to the period when these cases took place. The shock value is truly there. The cases are delivered with fervour, and the interactivity between Declan and the group was so refreshing with everyone participating and contributing. The locations visited made us appreciate the time the crimes took place, and it could allow your mind to expand and give you a sense of what it was like to be there. I look forward to booking onto a different tour in Autumn/Winter, and immersing myself in some new stories and experiencing the City of London under the cover of darkness. Also looking forward to reading Declan's book - 'Bloody London'.

Great tour, great tour guide! - This tour was awesome! Declan is a great tour guide and very knowledgeable. I had a group of 24 students and 3 teachers so a total of 27 people. It can be difficult to keep the attention of so many students, but Declan made the tour fun and interactive for everyone! We all learned a lot, and our company will definitely continue to book with Declan in the future!

Great tour - Great tour, Declan really knows his stuff and how to interact! Highly recommend. We went in summer so it wasn’t dark yet, but that didn’t affect the tour. I can only imagine the creepy factor if it was dark though, might have to do the tour again one winter!
