For those who find the Samaria Gorge hike too demanding, the Imbros Gorge provides a more manageable option. This 8-kilometer path is less challenging but just as enchanting. Imbros is the second most visited gorge in Crete, running alongside the Samaria Gorge. The hike takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, with the narrowest section measuring only 1.60 meters across. The journey begins with a half-hour descent through meadows filled with wildflowers before the path narrows significantly.
According to legend, the gorge was named by two brothers who were exiled from Imbros in Turkey and settled in the area. Historically, it was the primary route between Chania and Chora Sfakion and played a vital role as an evacuation route for British soldiers during World War II.
The hike concludes at Komitades, where visitors can unwind at a local café. From there, the journey continues to Chora Sfakion for a swim and lunch by the Libyan Sea. The tour includes hotel pick-up and a guide who will provide insights into the area’s flora and history.
