Göreme panoramic viewpoint captivates visitors who wish to admire the beauty of Cappadocia, as well as the sunrise and sunset, with its stunning views. The most convenient way to enjoy the beauty of the Cappadocia valleys, the unique fairy chimneys, and the colorful balloons in the sky is by visiting the Göreme panoramic viewpoint. This viewpoint, which offers a breathtaking view for those looking to unwind, is often bustling with people. This lively spot, frequented by tourists from around the world, becomes a hub for warm interactions and conversations. It is highly recommended for anyone visiting Cappadocia: Do not leave without experiencing the Göreme Panoramic Viewpoint!
- Uchisar Castle - Uchisar Castle is the highest point in Cappadocia and features a unique structure that made it a natural fortress. Initially admired for its fairy chimney shape, the castle was later adapted as an early warning system against attacks from higher ground during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.
- Kaymakli Underground City - The caves may have first been constructed in the soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, in the 8th–7th centuries BC. The city was significantly expanded and deepened during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) era, serving as protection from Muslim Arab raids during the Arab–Byzantine wars (780–1180). Some artifacts found in these underground settlements date back to the Middle Byzantine Period, between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. These cities continued to be used by Christian inhabitants as protection from the Mongolian incursions of Timur in the 14th century.
After the region was conquered by the Seljuk Turks of Persia, the cities served as refuges (Greek: καταφύγια, romanized: kataphúgia) from the Turkish Muslim rulers, and as late as the 20th century, the inhabitants, now called Rûm (‘Eastern Romans’) by their Ottoman Turkish rulers, continued to use the underground cities to escape periodic waves of Ottoman persecution.
- Pigeon Valley - Pigeon Valley has existed since the Hittite Empire, when it was used as a pigeon farm by local villagers who built homes into the canyon walls. The pigeons were used for food and to produce fertilizer for farmland, making them an essential part of the community’s economy. Today, most of these pigeon coops have been abandoned, but they can still be seen scattered across the valley walls, serving as a reminder of its past.
- Göreme Tarihi Milli Parki - In the 4th century, small anchorite communities began to form in the region, following the guidance of Saint Basil of Caesarea. They carved cells into the soft rock. During the iconoclastic period (725–842), the decoration of the many sanctuaries in the region was minimal, usually featuring symbols such as the depiction of the Christian cross. After this period, new churches were carved into the rocks and richly decorated with colorful frescoes.
- Fairy Chimneys - Paşabağ Valley is home to several ancient cave churches and chapels, carved into the rock. These cave churches and chapels were constructed between the 4th and 13th centuries by Christian monks during the Byzantine period. They are considered some of the oldest and best-preserved examples of rock-cut architecture in Cappadocia. Some of these churches and chapels contain elaborate frescoes depicting scenes from biblical stories, adding to their historical significance.
Paşabağ Valley is a remarkable place full of natural beauty and historical importance. Its fairy chimneys are among the most impressive examples in all of Cappadocia, while its ancient monasteries offer a glimpse into a past era when Christianity flourished in this region. For tourists and travelers alike, this is definitely a destination not to be missed!
- Avanos - Pottery is not unique to any one part of the world – many cultures have developed their own version of the art. However, it is fascinating to see how it varies from country to country, region to region, and even among different groups of people. For pottery enthusiasts, a visit to the town of Avanos, located about 8km from Göreme, is a must when in Cappadocia. It is considered the center of clay pottery in Turkey. The river that flows through Avanos is called Kizilirmak, meaning Red River. Since the Hittite period (as far back as 2000 BCE), people in the area have utilized the red clay found along the river’s banks.
