Highlights
  • Paseo de las Artes Chapultepec - We start in Chapultepec, the “hipster” area of the city. Once the wealthiest neighborhood in the 1900s, we’ll explore its evolving architecture and the “other muralism” in Guadalajara, featuring large wall paintings of iconic Mexican figures.
  • Templo Expiatorio del Santisimo Sacramento - One of Guadalajara’s most beautiful buildings, it took nearly a century to complete. We’ll admire its neo-Gothic style and stunning stained glass.
  • MUSA Museo de las Artes Universidad de Guadalajara - Next, we visit MUSA, the University of Guadalajara Museum, home to the incredible murals of José Clemente Orozco, one of Mexico’s greatest muralists. We’ll explore the “Paraninfo” and delve into their history. (Note: Entry may be restricted during private events, in which case we’ll appreciate the building from outside.)
  • Guadalajara Cathedral - We then head to the Historical Downtown to visit the “Cross of Plazas,” an ideal spot to experience the blend of tradition and modernity in our city’s history and culture.
  • Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Jalisco - Built in the 18th century, this is one of Guadalajara’s most important buildings, having witnessed many significant historical events. It also houses murals by José Clemente Orozco. (Note: Entry may be restricted during private events.)
  • Teatro Degollado - The best-preserved neoclassical theater in the Americas, we’ll stop to admire its stunning architecture from the outside and learn about its history.
  • Mercado Libertad - Also known as San Juan de Dios Market, it’s one of the largest markets in Latin America. Here, you’ll discover the vibrant world of Mexican cuisine, filled with colors, scents, and flavors, including delicious hot sauces!
  • Instituto Cultural Cabañas - Once an orphanage for nearly 200 years, it has become a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known locally as “El Hospicio,” it houses the masterpieces of José Clemente Orozco.

Great City, Remarkable Guide - Guadalajara is an amazing city and requires a really good guide to explain its remarkable history in the context of the sights you are seeing. We were fortunate to get Berenice Miramontes, who provided the best walking tour we have ever been on - and, we have been on many, all over the world. She is knowledgable, smart, fun, sensitive to her customers' interests and adds layers of information to each sight without being long-winded or over-explaining. Don't miss seeing this wonderful city and I hope you are fortunate enough to have Berenice as your guide.
