From Sunrise to Sunset: A Day of Nicaraguan Wonders
When the waves of Costa Rica called for a break, I decided to explore Nicaragua’s highlights in a day. From colonial Granada to the playful monkeys of Lake Nicaragua, the journey was a whirlwind of discovery.
A Sunrise Start to a Day of Discovery
The day began before the sun had even thought about rising. My wife and I, both seasoned adventurers, were picked up at 5:30 am, ready to embark on the Nicaragua Highlights Tour. As we left the familiar shores of Costa Rica, the anticipation of exploring Nicaragua’s treasures filled the air. The border crossing was a bit of a marathon, but our guide handled the paperwork with ease, allowing us to focus on the journey ahead.
Our first stop was a charming lakeside restaurant where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. The view of the lake was a perfect backdrop, and I couldn’t resist capturing a few photos. The morning light danced on the water, setting the tone for the adventure that lay ahead. The breakfast was delicious, a taste of Nicaragua that left us eager for more.
Exploring Granada’s Colonial Charm
Granada was a revelation. The colonial architecture, vibrant colors, and cobblestone streets transported us to another era. We opted for a horse-drawn carriage ride, a delightful way to soak in the city’s charm. The ride was an optional treat, but well worth the extra $10 per person. As we trotted through the streets, the city’s history unfolded before us, each building telling its own story.
We stopped at La Merced Church, where we climbed to the roof for a panoramic view of Granada, the Mombacho Volcano, and Lake Nicaragua. The sight was breathtaking, a moment that will linger in my memory. The tour was intimate, with a small group that allowed us to explore at a relaxed pace, savoring each stop without feeling rushed.
A Sunset Finale on Lake Nicaragua
As the day began to wind down, we embarked on a boat ride around the islets of Lake Nicaragua. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the water. Our guide took us to Monkey Island, where playful monkeys greeted us, eager for a snack. It was a whimsical end to a day filled with discovery.
Though we missed the Masaya Volcano due to a natural cave-in, the tour company made sure to substitute with a visit to the Christ of Mercy statue. While it wasn’t the same as standing next to an active crater, it was a thoughtful addition that added to the day’s experiences.
The journey back to Costa Rica was long, but the memories of the day kept us company. As we crossed the border once more, I reflected on the whirlwind of sights and sounds that had filled our day. It was a long day, indeed, but every moment was worth it. Nicaragua had shared its highlights with us, and I was grateful for the adventure.
