A Journey Through Time and Nature

The moment I set foot on the ancient Camino Real trail, I felt a profound connection to the land and its history. This path, originally built by the Guane Indians over 600 years ago, is a testament to the enduring spirit of the indigenous people who once thrived here. As I began my hike from Barichara to Guane, the air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the distant call of exotic birds. The trail, a 7 km stretch of stone and earth, wound its way through a landscape that seemed to whisper secrets of the past.

Adrian, our guide, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of the Guane people and the German engineer Geo Von Lengerke, who later adapted the trail. His passion for the region was infectious, and I found myself hanging on his every word. As we walked, the vegetation shifted from lush tropical plants to arid cacti, a reminder of the diverse ecosystems that coexist in this part of Colombia. The Cerrania de Los Yariquies, part of the Colombian National Natural Parks, unfolded before us, offering breathtaking views that seemed to stretch into eternity.

Discovering Guane’s Hidden Treasures

Our first stop was the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, a small but fascinating collection curated by Father Isaias Diaz Ardila. Here, I marveled at the 10,000 fossils, each a window into a world millions of years old. The highlight, however, was a 700-year-old mummy, discovered in one of the Chicamocha Canyon caves. It was a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Guane people.

The museum also housed an array of ceramics, necklaces, and other artifacts crafted by the Guane Indians. Each piece told a story of a people deeply connected to the land and its resources. As a biologist and environmental activist, I was particularly moved by the ingenuity and sustainability of their craftsmanship. It was a humbling experience, one that reinforced my commitment to preserving the natural and cultural wonders of our world.
