Highlights
  • Tikal National Park - Our tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and after an hour and 30 minute drive you’ll arrive at Tikal National Park. You will visit the main highlights and get the opportunity to climb some of the most important structures. To get the full understanding of the greatness of this civilization, your guide will explain the dynastic history of the rulers of this great city and full description of the structures and what you are observing.
  • Great Plaza - Most of this interesting hike will be under the canopy of the trees so you´ll be well protected from the sun but under the watch of Spider and Howler monkeys and the many species of birds found in Tikal.

Twin Pyramid Complex Q will be one of our stops before getting to the Great Plaza, a commemorative complex unique to Tikal and your first opportunity to climb a pyramid and your first carved monument of the 29th king of the ruling dynasty.

After a short walk passing through another Twin Pyramid Complex you get to an original causeway which takes you exactly behind the most iconic temple in Tikal, The Great Jaguar Temple.

  • Temple I - To get a better understanding of their lifestyle, we take a detour and explore the residential structures in the Central Acropolis and then move to the North Acropolis which is where most of the royal tombs were found. This will leave you in front of Temple I, the Great Jaguar Temple and in the middle of the Great Plaza.

  • Temple II - Here, you will be perfectly positioned to get the best picture of the iconic Temple I, the mortuary temple of one of the most important rulers of Tikal, Hasaw Chaan Kawil.

  • Lost World - Your guide will lead you to the plaza with the earliest evidence of occupation in Tikal and an opportunity to climb the Great Pyramid. The view from here is incredible, you will a 360 degrees view over the canopy of the trees and the tallest structures at very close distance for some amazing photographs. This is also where you wait for the sunset when you do a later tour. The Lost World Complex was very important for the mayas as it was their Astronomical Observatory Complex.

  • Temple IV - One of the main highlights of the tour is going up one of the tallest single constructions in the western hemisphere.
Definitely a privileged place to stand since in the heyday of this sophisticated city, only the ruler and the high priest were allowed to have this view. Now looking over the canopy of the trees and a clear sight of the tip of Temples I, Temple II and Temple II.
This temple is also very popular and sometimes known as the Star Wars Temple because in 1977 the producer George Lucas included a scene from this very point for the movie Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope.

  • Tikal National Park - After this wonderful experience you will make your way down through trails in the forest to the restaurant and enjoy a hot, delicious local dish and a cold drink of your choice…

Best tour leader in Belize - Reyes organised a 9 day tour of Belize for us and was a wonderful tour leader throughout. His enthusiasm and passion is second to none and nothing was too much trouble. His love and knowledge for Tikal and Bird watching is especially infectious and you just want to find out more. I would highly recommend using Reyes as he gives you the personnel touch which makes such lasting memories.

Do not miss seeing Tikal! - Wow! That’s all I can say. The site is so amazing and even though this was a whirlwind day trip from Guatemala City (the day after we arrived), the early morning was worth it to experience Tikal. Our guide was fantastic and we had enough time to explore everything we wanted to see!

An excellent 4 day tour with Reyes - We had an excellent 4 day with Reyes and Maya Adventure Travel. We were recommended his company by several people on the Expat Guatemala Facebook group. Our itinerary was jam packed we were able to see a lot of different things. Reyes was a great tour guide for a number of reasons, he was knowledgeable, friendly and flexible with our group. We had an 8 year old boy who wasn't too interested in the history of the Mayan culture and preferred to clamber up ruins and search every nook and cranny for passageways and bats. Reyes was understanding of this, even if he had to deviate from his standard tour a little. Day 1 Flores -> Yaxha: Reyes picked us up early and we headed to Yaxha. We did a short boat tour and saw a few crocodiles and then visited a Mayan site on a nearby island and were able to see our first howler monkeys and Mayan ruins. In the afternoon we visited each of the structures in Yaxha and learned about their history with Tikal and neighboring towns. We got a great view of the landscape and sunset from the astronomical complex in the evening. Day 2 Yaxha -> Belize -> Tikal: It was a busy day, but a great way to break up learning about history with a bit of adventure. Reyes made crossing the Belize border super simple, he's a dual Guatemalan, Belizean so he knows all the ins and outs. My family really liked to stopping at a small local kitchen to try some fry jacks for a late breakfast. We enjoyed the zip lining but particularly enjoyed cave tubing through approximately 1km river in underground caves. It's something we haven't experienced anywhere else. We were able to make it back to Tikal by sunset. Day 3 Tikal -> Uaxactun -> Tikal Uaxactun is an interesting site that's about a 45 minute car trip from Tikal. Part of what makes it fascinating is that it's managed by a local community that's living in the center of the ancient site. Many of the buildings remain unexcavated, but the ones that are demonstrate the importance of the site. We liked that there were basically no other tourists there. In the afternoon and evening we explored Tikal which is obviously the highlight when it comes to the size and quantity of Mayan architecture. We visited each of the temples and enjoyed the sunset from the top of one of them as toucans sat in the trees nearby. Our son really enjoyed clambering up and down everything that he was able to and we enjoyed hearing about the power struggles between Tikal and neighboring cities. Day 4 - Tikal -> Flores We did a half day where we headed back to Flores and explored the Arcas Animal refuge which is well worth a visit. They had a few animals that I'd never seen before, like the jaguarundi. After this we visited El Mirador which has a great view back to Flores and of the surrounding area. Overall, we highly recommend Maya Adventure Travels and Reyes.

Great Tour of Tikal - Reyes did a great job. Took the time to explain the buildings, hieroglyphics, and history of the Mayan civilization. Many interesting facts given. He was also patient and allowed us to go at our own pace. Great pics also. Pickup and return at our hotel in Flores. Overall 5 stars and would highly recommend.
