Tikal National Park - The term Tikal might originate from the Itzá Mayan language expression ti ak’al, which translates to ‘Place of Voices.’ This designation seems to have been coined by the pioneering archaeologists who worked on the site.
Nonetheless, Tikal was not the original name of the location, but rather a moniker that came into use shortly after the site was rediscovered in the 1840s.
The Mayan script carvings found among the ruins refer to the ancient metropolis as Yax Mutal, which is interpreted as ‘Sacred Knot.’
It is speculated that the name Tikal was chosen to differentiate it from Dos Pilas, which had begun to adopt the same emblem glyph. The city’s leaders aimed to assert their primacy as the original bearers of this emblem. The realm was collectively known as Mutal, which is the deciphered name from the emblem glyph. The precise significance of this term remains uncertain, but some scholars believe it may be linked to the title of Ku’hul Ahaw, or the supreme sovereign.

Tikal was the capital that evolved into one of the most influential kingdoms of the ancient Maya. While the monumental architecture of the site dates back to 800 BC, Tikal reached its zenith during the Classic Period, between 200 and 900 AD, when the city dominated much of the Maya region.
