Sailing into Serenity: A Private Day on Puerto Rico’s South Coast
When the call of the ocean beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of a private sail along Puerto Rico’s South Coast. With the promise of hidden cays and vibrant marine life, this adventure was one I had to experience firsthand.
Setting Sail on the South Coast
The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to the docks of the Guayama Fishing Club, a place renowned for its local flavors and breathtaking sunset views. The drive from San Juan was a scenic journey through the lush landscapes of the Cordillera Central, setting the tone for the adventure that awaited. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the ocean, and the promise of exploring the South Coast of Puerto Rico on a private sail was too tempting to resist.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Captain Luis and his first mate, Fidel. Their warm smiles and easygoing demeanor immediately put me at ease. The sailboat, a well-maintained 36-footer, was ready to take us on a journey through the tranquil waters of the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. With no big waves to worry about, it was the perfect setting for a relaxing day on the water.
Discovering Hidden Gems
As we set sail, Fidel shared fascinating insights about the coastline and the many cays we passed. His knowledge of the local flora, sea creatures, and topography was impressive, and it added a layer of depth to the experience. We soon anchored near a secluded cay, and the adventure truly began.
A motorized boat took us to a dock surrounded by mangroves, a serene spot that felt like our own private paradise. The water was inviting, and I couldn’t resist diving in for a swim. Snorkeling revealed a vibrant underwater world, teeming with colorful fish. Paddleboarding offered a different perspective, gliding over the clear waters with the sun warming my back.
The cay was a treasure trove of activities. Hiking trails wound through the landscape, and I found myself chasing iguanas and marveling at the untouched beauty of the area. It was a reminder of why I love island life so much – the freedom to explore and connect with nature in its purest form.
A Day to Remember
Captain Luis and Fidel had thoughtfully prepared a meat and cheese tray, along with water, which was a pleasant surprise. I had brought my own provisions, but it was nice to have a little extra to enjoy. As we lounged on the dock, shaded by the mangroves, I felt a sense of contentment that only comes from a day well spent.
The return sail was just as smooth as the journey out, with the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water. It was a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and relaxation.
For those considering this sailing adventure, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-timer, the experience is sure to leave you with memories to cherish. Just remember to pack plenty of sunblock, hats, and long-sleeve swim shirts to make the most of your time on the water. And don’t forget your flip-flops – they’re perfect for the boat!
