The reserve is a sanctuary for numerous wildlife species, including some that are endangered, such as the canclón, an aquatic bird native to the similarly named lagoon, and the coastal crocodile, now extinct in other coastal regions. Owing to the richness and vast reach of water habitats safeguarded by the reserve, it was designated as a Ramsar site in 1990, affirming its global significance as a wetland.
