Discovering the Basque Coast: A Family Adventure

Our journey began with a sense of excitement as we embarked on a private tour of the Basque Coast, a region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and enjoyable for my children, and this adventure did not disappoint.

Our first stop was the historic town of Gernika-Lumo, a place that holds a significant place in history due to the tragic events of 1937. Walking through the town, we visited the famous oak tree under which the town’s affairs were once governed. Exploring Mundaka and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Our adventure continued to the picturesque fishing village of Mundaka, known for its world-famous waves. While my children were too young to surf, they were thrilled to watch the surfers ride the impressive left-hand break. The village itself was delightful, and we enjoyed a friendly game of Basque pelota, a traditional sport that was both challenging and fun.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the mainland by a series of 241 steps. The climb was a bit challenging for the little ones, but the views from the top were absolutely worth it. The dramatic cliffs and the sound of the waves crashing below created a magical atmosphere, and it was easy to see why this location was chosen as a filming site for the popular series Game of Thrones.

As we descended the steps, we took a moment to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving such unique landscapes for future generations to enjoy.

Our final destination was the iconic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, a masterpiece of modern architecture that has become a symbol of the city. The museum’s unique design captivated my children, and they were eager to explore the contemporary art exhibits inside.

The museum offered a variety of interactive displays and activities that were perfect for young visitors. My children particularly enjoyed the hands-on art workshops, where they had the chance to create their own masterpieces inspired by the works on display. It was a wonderful way to introduce them to the world of art and creativity.
