A review from December 7, 2023, captures the magic of this experience:
A definite must go! Wished we had spent more time there, allow for at least half a day. The view from the peak was beautiful. Buying charms and hanging along the bridge was a novelty but the red charms make photographs beautiful. Highly recommended. (Reviewed at: 2023-12-07)
After descending from the peak, take a leisurely stroll through the surrounding area, where you can enjoy the tranquility of the mountains and the crisp winter air.
A Cultural Journey Through Yangshuo
As the day progresses, make your way to Yangshuo, a town that embodies the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. The weather on December 15th is favorable, with temperatures ranging from 45°F to 60°F, providing a comfortable setting for exploration. Begin your cultural journey with the Li River Cruise, available from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The blend of traditional Chinese architecture with modern influences creates a unique atmosphere that is both nostalgic and contemporary. A review from May 25, 2024, highlights the enriching experience of this journey:
Great trip to Longji rice terraces - Leo took us on a one day road trip to Longji rice terraces, Longhair village, and a place to learn about and sample teas. He took us to a local place for a delicious lunch with a view. He was very accommodating for our multiple stops for ice cream, and helped us buy boat and show tickets. Leo was patient when I was shopping and helped me communicate with shop owners. He was prompt, spoke English well, had a clean car, and drove safely. Highly recommend. (Reviewed at: 2024-05-25)
As you explore West Street, take the time to savor the local cuisine and engage with the friendly locals, who are always eager to share their stories and traditions.
Discovering the Art Palace of Nature
No visit to Guilin is complete without a trip to the Reed Flute Cave, known as the “Art Palace of Nature.” This natural wonder is a must-see, with its magnificent stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by colorful lights. The cave is open for exploration on December 14th, and it takes about fifty minutes to fully appreciate its splendor.
As you wander through the cave, you’ll be mesmerized by the intricate formations that have been shaped over millions of years. The Crystal Palace, where illuminated stalagmites reflect in the cave’s natural lake, is one of the most impressive sights. A review from October 9, 2018, perfectly encapsulates the awe-inspiring nature of this attraction:
Great organisation and a lot to see - Leo was again (because we did another tour with him the day before) well organised and made our day worth the walk! Starting with the Elephant Trunk Hill (fabulous view over the city), we then walked around the lake which was really busy (Golden Week!!) but so full of characters. From there, we went thanks to the driver to the Reed Flute Cave: a must see if you are in Guilin. If you are right on time, you will see two shows (creation of the cave on the ceiling and a ballet part displayed on a screen). Leo organised lunch in a local restaurant (food was amazing!) and from there, we drove to Daxu which was a lovely old village next to the river Li (I think). Full of local markets with plenty to buy and to visit. Back to the hotel around 4.30pm (we left at 9.30) and I can tell you we saw a lot and did a lot too. (Reviewed at: 2018-10-09)
As your weekend in Guilin comes to a close, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the city’s natural beauty and cultural richness. Whether you’re cruising along the Li River or exploring the depths of the Reed Flute Cave, Guilin offers a winter experience that is both enchanting and unforgettable.
