Join me as I explore the historically rich cities of Guimarães and Braga with my family. Discover ancient castles, spiritual sanctuaries, and the birthplace of Portugal in this unforgettable day tour.
A Journey Through Time: Exploring Guimarães and Braga
As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for destinations that offer both educational value and fun for the whole family. When I heard about the Guimarães & Braga Day Tour—a journey through two historically rich Portuguese cities—I knew it was a perfect fit for us. The promise of exploring ancient castles and sanctuaries was too enticing to pass up.
Our day began with a convenient pick-up from our hotel at 9 AM. The kids were buzzing with excitement, and I was eager to see how these cities, so pivotal in Portugal’s history, would capture their imaginations. Our first stop was Braga, a city established by the Roman Empire as Bracara Augusta. The Cathedral Sé de Braga was our introduction to the city’s rich past. The intricate architecture and the stories behind each stone fascinated the kids, and I found myself weaving tales of knights and ancient rituals to keep their curiosity piqued.
Discovering the Spiritual Heart of Braga
Next, we visited the Sanctuary Bom Jesus and Sanctuary Sameiro. These sites are not only spiritual havens but also offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The climb up the baroque stairway at Bom Jesus was a mini-adventure in itself, and the kids loved counting the steps as we ascended. The panoramic view from the top was a reward in itself, and we took a moment to soak in the beauty of the lush greenery and the city below.
Lunch was a delightful break, giving us a chance to sample some local Portuguese cuisine. The kids enjoyed trying new dishes, and I appreciated the opportunity to relax and reflect on the morning’s adventures. The tour was well-paced, allowing us to explore without feeling rushed, which is always a plus when traveling with children.
Stepping into the Past in Guimarães
After lunch, we headed to Guimarães, often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets and medieval buildings sparked the kids’ imaginations, and they eagerly explored every nook and cranny.
The Castle of Guimarães was a highlight for all of us. The kids were thrilled to explore the ancient fortress, and I was impressed by how well-preserved it was. We also visited the Chapel of S. Miguel, where the first King of Portugal was supposedly baptized. The sense of history was palpable, and it was a wonderful opportunity to teach the kids about Portugal’s rich heritage in a way that was engaging and interactive.
Our final stop was the Paço dos Duques, a grand palace that offered a glimpse into the lives of Portuguese nobility. The kids were fascinated by the opulent rooms and the stories of the dukes and duchesses who once lived there.
As we returned to our hotel at 6 PM, I reflected on the day’s journey. The Guimarães & Braga Day Tour had been a perfect blend of education and adventure, offering something for everyone in the family. It was a reminder of why I love traveling with my children—seeing the world through their eyes and sharing in the wonder of discovery.
