Great trip on the La Regina 2 - Amazing trip on La Regina 2. The staff are all super friendly especially Tom, the manager Sam and waiter Harry. The kayaking was fantastic, we hired the jacuzzi afterwards which was wonderful and then had a lovely 5 star meal for dinner. The rooms are fantastic and I had a great sleep. Wished it was longer but overall very pleased.

A $500USD Mistake? - Ha Long Bay is definitely spectacular, however the overall experience was not. We opted to pay Regina for transfers to and from Hanoi, and whilst the van was quite lux, the ‘toilet break’ only 10 minutes from our final get off point was nothing more than a 30 minute tourist trap at a local souvenir market. Completely unnecessary. Upon arrival at the Regina terminal, it was a chaotic, disorganised mess with no clear direction and a stack of people like us who’d paid a fair chunk of money only to be left scratching our heads about what the hell was going on - and this lasted for about an hour. Once onboard the boat revealed itself to be quite old. The room was fine although there was no minibar fridge as promised on the website, so that bottle of champagne I brought onboard to celebrate our trip to Vietnam never had a chance to chill. Shame. The food was pretty awful. I’m not sure how a stock standard pumpkin soup made its way onto the set dinner menu. The meal served up to the vegetarians on the adjacent table looked appalling which would explain why they hardly touched it. The staff it must be said were excellent so my overall assessment is by no means a reflection upon them. But we came to see Ha Long Bay and whilst what we saw was the hero of the trip, we spent most of the 12 or so daylight hours onboard anchored. The 30 minutes we spent on the top deck during the time when day turned to night was stunning, even in overcast conditions. Was $500USD worth that 30 minutes of spectacular scenery? On balance I don’t think so. A sunset cruise if they exist would have been a much better investment.
