Highlights
  • Grote Markt - On the Grote Markt, you’ll find the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, the town hall, and the Sint Bavo Church.
  • Stadhuis Haarlem - Our route takes us past the old town hall.
  • Sint-Bavokerk (Church of St. Bavo) - We pass by the Sint Bavokerk on our route.
  • Botermarkt - Our route goes through the Botermarkt, one of Haarlem’s most beautiful squares.
  • Trou moet Blycken - We pass the former men’s society building, known for its beautiful, historic facade.
  • Grote Houtstraat - We walk through Haarlem’s largest shopping area, also famous for its appearance in the game Monopoly.
  • Frans Hals Museum - If I may suggest, a visit to the Frans Hals Museum is highly recommended. The museum showcases various collections, including the internationally renowned 17th-century art from Haarlem, with Frans Hals as the leading figure.
  • Nieuwe Kerk of Sint Annakerk Haarlem - Built in 1649, the Nieuwe Kerk was the first stone church in Haarlem specifically for Protestants. Designed by Jacob van Campen, the church focuses on the centrally positioned pulpit, making the preacher visible and audible from all angles. The tower, dating back to 1613, was preserved by the Haarlem city council during the church’s construction.
  • Brouwershofje - We visit the courtyard founded in 1457 by Jacob Huyge Roeperszoon and his sister Katrijntje Huyge Roepersdat, a brewing family associated with the Brewers’ Guild. The courtyard originally housed 22 poor, unmarried women who had worked as ‘maids’ for breweries.
  • Museumbezoek Huis Barnaart - At Nieuwe Gracht 7, we pass the Museumhuis Barnaart, a must-visit. This stately building was once owned by one of the city’s wealthiest merchants, Willem Philip Barnaart. At 21, he commissioned Abraham van der Hart to build his reception house on the canal, resulting in a city palace with the best-preserved Empire interior in the Netherlands. It remains one of the city’s most beautiful houses and is open to the public.

fun and relaxing way to get to know a city - What a fun and relaxing way to get to know a city. We saw all sorts of fun things, where we could take our time to look at them. We sat on a terrace along the way!

Inexpensive tour of Haarlem with some details - The app provided a nice walk past many of the highlights of Haarlem. The app was quite slow to load on my phone and when it froze and I restarted it, it took 5+ minutes to continue the walk. When you open it, there appear to be more than 60 stops, but in reality, almost half are telling you to turn here or continue on this road. The write-ups were quite short - 1-2 sentences for most of the sites which did not provide much info. The read aloud function stopped working near the beginning of the tour, but it wasn’t too hard to read the write-ups myself. The GPS function worked pretty well, except at the beginning as I walked around the square trying to get to the exact right spot so the app allowed the tour to start.
