These creatures are distinguished by their unique bony shell or carapace, which forms from their ribs and serves as a protective shield. Chelonians are an ancient group, with the earliest proto-turtles appearing over 220 million years ago during the Triassic Era. The order Chelonii, or Testudines, includes three types of members: turtles, tortoises, and terrapins.
