Safari guide Kalum has been organizing tours to Minneriya National Park for over 15 years and has a deep understanding of the elephants’ behavior and routines in the park. He recommended that we take our tour in the morning when there are fewer cars and more opportunities for private encounters with the elephants, rather than in the afternoon when we might see more elephants but also many more cars, which would spoil the experience. Although we were initially skeptical about this decision, we decided to trust Kalum’s expertise and experience. From the beginning, our guide took a different route than the other safari vehicles, allowing us to have private, close encounters with the elephants. Kalum made every effort to position his vehicle to enable us to capture the best photo compositions throughout the tour, allowing us to take close-up photographs of the elephants in Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu parks.
