Explore one of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO HERITAGE Site - SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS. This notable landmark which is significant in history and archaeology is characterized by a towering column of rock rising nearly 200 meters (660 ft.) into the sky. As per the historical Sri Lankan record, the Culavamsa, King Kassapa chose this location as his new capital. He constructed his royal residence at the peak of this rock and beautified its sides with vibrant murals. A colossal lion-shaped gateway was built halfway up the rock, giving the site its name - SIHAGIRI, the Lion Rock. Following King Kassapa’s demise, the capital and royal palace were left deserted. The site transformed into a Buddhist monastery, serving as such until the 14th century.
