Great time - Loved the horses and guides! Such a special treat to get to experience a unique horse. The ride branched off so that slow riders could stay together and some of us could get to go faster.

Fantastic ride through Icelandic countryside! Great for all levels - An absolutely fantastic place! I am an experienced rider who rides professionally in the states and I can tell you they did a 5 star job from beginning to end. The horses were extremely safe and well mannered, the tack and equipment was in perfect condition. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly . This is a great place for any level of experience, from absolute first timers to experienced. They divide you by experience level and you have the ability to go with the beginner group or more advanced. A must do in ICELAND!!

A nice diversion from more common activities in Iceland. - A lovely experience riding horses in a very unique landscape. Recommend bundling up as you’re outdoors subjected to the wind, rain, and cold.

Beautiful horses, friendly professional staff! - This is a great horse riding stable with wonderful and friendly guides. All the staff were very helpful (we had a situation that they resolved without a hassle and were very kind about it). Also, the horses are obviously well cared for and easy to ride. It was a blast to ride thru Iceland on amazing and beautiful Icelandic majestic horses.

We loved riding horses at... - We loved riding horses at IsHestar on our last day in Iceland. Five of us - two adults and three teenagers - will never forget our snowy ride with funny horses! They all had a personality of their own. The guides were wonderful and experienced and communication was great. We chose the "adventurous" track and loved trotting. We laughed so hard and are still talking about our experience.

Great Experience - Great experience! Picked up on time from downtown bus stop by driver. Well organized and efficient process during instructions, selecting appropriate horse and getting on. Ride was amazing; we were asked a little bit into the ride if we wanted to stay in the beginner walk group or branch off with a faster tolt group. I was a little hesitant going solo about the pick up in the city but I felt very safe and it was very easy👍 The guide was delightful and gave us some interesting information on the breed and she took nice photos of us on our horse. Bonus for our ride we had a beautiful rainbow🌈

Horse Riding Tour in Iceland – A Beautiful Blend of Scenery, History, and Viking Charm - I had the pleasure of riding a gorgeous black-and-white horse named Lokki (think that’s how he’s spelled ), who was fast, responsive, reactive (in a good way , meaning he responds very well) but full of energy … if you don’t know how to ride well I wouldn’t advise Lokki as you need to be able to really be in control but also not be afraid to allow him to walk at his natural energetic pace so he enjoys the ride as well as you - we had a very very good connection and he was a breeze (LITERALLY!!) the instructors are great when it comes to predicting which Viking horse you’d have a good connection with —exactly the kind of horse I was hoping for ! My friend rode Bjór (which, fun fact, means beer in Icelandic—amazing lol 🍻) She went on the other route, but said he was so gentle. One tip: make sure to let the instructors know your riding experience beforehand. They’re fantastic at pairing you with a horse that suits your confidence level and ability, and they’ll only put you on a horse you’re comfortable with.
The tour guide was absolutely brilliant—super knowledgeable and friendly. Just a heads-up: the group rides in a single-file line, so if you want to hear all the folklore, history, and stories about Viking horses, try to ride near the front. Those at the back miss out on a lot of the commentary. There’s a photo stop along the way with breathtaking views, so don’t forget your camera!
After about 15 minutes of walking, the group is offered a choice between a standard and an advanced route. I highly recommend taking the advanced route, like I did—it’s not physically demanding at all. The main difference is that you’ll get to trot and try the famous tölt, a unique and smooth gait specific to Icelandic horses. Trotting here isn’t like in the UK—you don’t rise out of the saddle; you stay seated and it’s a much more fluid ride. Many riders were actually suited for the advanced option but felt unsure at first because they didn’t know what to expect. Unless you’re really lacking confidence, I’d say go for it! That said, the regular route reportedly has beautiful views as well.
These Icelandic horses are naturally calm and friendly, and they’re very used to having different riders on them every day. This isn’t a cantering tour, though—it’s more about enjoying the ride and the scenery leisurely, with the option of tilt, if you’d like!
There’s no mounting block, so you’ll need to get onto the horse yourself, but don’t worry—the Viking horses are smaller than many other breeds, and the staff are very helpful, especially for beginners. Even first-time riders were up and settled quickly.
After the ride, you’re offered coffee, though we had to down ours *pretty quickly* as we were heading off elsewhere and the riding stable was closing up —but it was still a nice touch.
Quick gear tips:
• Bring normal gloves for gripping the reins—many people only had bulky winter gloves which don’t work well for riding.
•. People went in trainers but if you plan to ride (beginners or not!) having a low square heel (one inch like a riding boots) will prevent your foot from slipping all the way through the stirrup. trainers/flat shoes fine for walk; boots if you’d like to try the tolt, because if your foot slides too far in, it’s not so good. The heel gives your foot the balance for tolting - so pack them!
• Waterproofs are essential if still in a winter season like March —you’ll be up high, and the weather can change quickly.
• A balaclava is a better choice than a scarf, especially if you’re planning to tolt - I only had a scarf but I saw some had balaclavas - ideal!
• If you take the advanced route, you’ll warm up—but if you’re walking only, it can get chilly.
We were lucky to experience some rain at the top, which gave way to an absolutely stunning rainbow across the mountains and lava fields. It was magical!
This experience is perfect for novice riders—relaxed and scenic, with the option to go at your own pace. If you’re a more experienced rider, just know there’s no cantering, and the trail is a bit rocky, but the scenery and the tölt still make it a unique and worthwhile ride.
