A Journey Through Time: Discovering Armenia’s Monastic Marvels

Our family has always been drawn to the allure of ancient history and the stories that echo through time. So, when we found ourselves in Armenia, the opportunity to explore the ancient monasteries of Sanahin, Haghpat, and Odzun was irresistible. These sites, nestled in the lush Lori region, promised a day of discovery and wonder, and they did not disappoint.

The Enchanting Haghpat Monastery

Our journey began at the Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a testament to Armenia’s rich cultural and religious history. As we approached the complex, the air was filled with a sense of reverence and tranquility. The monastery, founded by the Bagratuni dynasty between the 10th and 13th centuries, is a marvel of medieval architecture.

Walking through the ancient halls, we were captivated by the intricate carvings and the serene beauty of the St. Nshan Church. Our guide, Tigran, shared fascinating stories about the monastery’s past as a major center of learning and manuscript preservation. The kids were particularly intrigued by the tales of monks who once walked these grounds, copying texts by hand in the scriptorium.

The highlight for our family was the tiered bell tower, where we paused to take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. It was a moment of reflection, standing in a place that has witnessed centuries of history.

Sanahin: A Hub of Knowledge

A short drive brought us to the Sanahin Monastery, another UNESCO-listed site. Sanahin, meaning “older than that one” in Armenian, is aptly named, as it predates its sister monastery, Haghpat. This site was once a thriving educational center, and as we explored its grounds, we could almost hear the echoes of scholars and students from centuries past.

The architecture of Sanahin is both grand and intimate, with its main church, Amenaprkich, standing proudly amidst the complex. Our children were fascinated by the stories of the Armenian clerics who established the monastery after being expelled from Byzantium. Tigran’s engaging storytelling brought the history to life, making it accessible and exciting for all of us.

We also visited the Sanahin Bridge, a remarkable 12th-century structure that spans the Debed River. The kids enjoyed imagining the travelers who once crossed this bridge, connecting distant lands and cultures.

Odzun: A Unique Architectural Gem

Our final stop was the Odzun Monastery, perched on a plateau with stunning views of the Debed Canyon. Built in the 6th century, Odzun is unique in its architectural design, with a layout that sets it apart from other Armenian churches. The two belfries, added in the 19th century, add a touch of elegance to the structure.

As we explored the monastery, we were struck by the sense of timelessness that enveloped us. The kids were thrilled to participate in a hands-on activity at a nearby restaurant, where they learned to bake a traditional Armenian fruit pie. It was a delightful way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Armenia while reflecting on the rich history we had just experienced.
