Haghpat Monastery is strategically positioned to survey the Debed River from its vantage point in the northern Armenian territory of Lori. Sanahin Monastery, a 10th-century Armenian monastery, is situated in Armenia’s Lori Province.

Its name, Sanahin, directly interpreted from Armenian, signifies ‘this one is older than that one’, which probably asserts its precedence over the neighboring Haghpat Monastery. They share many characteristics and are visibly located across each other on a dissected plateau structure. A deep ‘crack’, created by a minor river merging into the Debed river, separates the two monasteries and their villages.
